I carry my pocket knife, which is balanced to be a throwing knife, everywhere. It is 2.9 inches long, below my state's 3 inch limit. It is perfectly legal, and is a "utility knife". I really do use it for a lot of every day things, but I had this one custom made to be balanced and have a good grip so I can use it in defense if I ever need to.
