Ask any victim whether 'removing the criminal from society in relative comfort for a few months' is any kind of justice or retribution for turning their life upside down. I think you'd find it hard to find one that agrees. In fact, they may well tell you you're retarded.
For it to be a punishment, people would actually have to fear the consequences of committing a crime. But it's quite apparent that most career criminals don't give a shit about doing time in a cushy prison, and are willing to yo-yo in and out of incarceration their entire lives. Many even see their stretches as a fucking status symbol.
