Ask any victim whether 'removing the criminal from society in relative comfort for a few months' is any kind of justice or retribution for turning their life upside down. I think you'd find it hard to find one that agrees. In fact, they may well tell you you're retarded.

For it to be a punishment, people would actually have to fear the consequences of committing a crime. But it's quite apparent that most career criminals don't give a shit about doing time in a cushy prison, and are willing to yo-yo in and out of incarceration their entire lives. Many even see their stretches as a fucking status symbol.

So what should we do then, let criminals off completely or should we just send a firing squad for even for petty crimes?

Sounds like you're a complete pussy that got victimized and wouldn't stand up for himself.

Most people in prison aren't even there for a crime that had a victim. For example drug use.

When a person is convicted of drug use then released back into society it's because of attitudes like yours they have an extremely hard time finding a decent job. Which results in more crime that turns into your "yo-yo" effect.

It's good that you come from a good background, but not everyone is as lucky as you.

What ever happened to hard labor? I think criminals should build roads, schools, libraries. They should mow and weedeat elderly peoples lawns. Serve homeless people food, or build homeless people houses. They should pick up trash on the side of the road, clean up dog shit at the dog park. For free. You know ... actually repay their debt to society. Instead society gives them living accommodations better than what they had on the outside, better criminal training, and a slap on the wrist.

Ha Ha is that Real?

As already pointed out, most criminals are in prison for property and drug crimes. Also, if you think prison is cushy you're even more retarded than I thought. There ain't nothing fun or cushy about it, and people rarely go to prison for months, they go there for years. Your whole concept of the corrections system is fucking delusional. Stop watching Law and Order and maybe you'll learn how shit really works.

The consequences are losing your freedom. You've obviously never lost your freedom and for some reason have no concept of why that is such a bad thing. If you can't fathom why it sucks, I'm not sure how to explain it to you. How about this - picture everything and everyone you love and all the things you enjoy doing. Now they all get taken away from you for X number of years. That's why it sucks. Hope that helps.

But that would only hurt normal people. Most of the people in prison are low-life scum who don't give a shit about their life or anyone elses. Being inside for a couple of years means very little loss to them, considering the gains they make through their criminal lifestyle. Incarceration just doesn't hit them where it hurts. And they should be hurt. Hence, rape and violence in prisons is a good thing; it adds some proper justice to the sentence. It's either that, or the prison conditions should be made much more harsh.

The prison conditions should be MUCH harsher, and require the inmates to do something productive for the community/country. They need to be a lot more strict in there too, there shouldn't be gangs and such INSIDE the prison too.

Think of it like this, there's about 2.5million people incarcerated in the US...according to the number given in this thread that's at least 2.2million a year not getting raped, that's counting each rape as a new victim. That gives you a pretty low chance(13%) of getting raped for that to be the "real" punishment.

lolz go to jail, expect to get werked. My best friend's brother is a state prison guard, he says it's total Lord of the Flies inside. The way he sees it, his main job is just making sure the various factions keep the peace between themselves; guards don't have the bandwidth for the little crap unless a particular inmate is going apeshit and disrupting routine. Don't do the crime if you can't do the time.

I hope you use a different type of math to figure out your campaign profitability because I'm lolllllling my ass off at you thinking 13% of the prison population gets raped - the real number is probably pretty far below 1%.

What exactly are you guys basing your opinions off of? Why do I get the feeling you guys are watching Lock-Up on MSNBC and thinking the Level 5 prisons they show (which make for good TV) are somehow indicative of the way most prisons work and how most prisoners act? I hate to burst your bubbles, but those prisons they show on TV are about as similar to how most prisons/prisoners are, as Jersey Shore represents how most people in the real world behave.

There is a buttload of misinformation and generalizations in here.

First of all, no two prisons are alike. And for the most part, rapists/murderers and other violent criminals are the ones who end up in the sort of facilities that are prone to...guess what? Rape and murder. The white collar guy whose criminal record began with tax evasion isn't going to be thrown into that mix. And as UG pointed out, the prevalence of that sort of activity is exaggerated.

To assert that most people in prison don't give a shit about anyone is ridiculous. No point in even arguing it.

Maybe I watch a lot of Lock-up, maybe I've had more than one family member incarcerated. Either way, that's my two cents.
