It baffles me when some don't consider that time is money.

You know what? Time is actually worth more than money, much more! You can always make money, but you can never gain more time. It kills me how some people don't realize that. I have some friends that refuse to take a cab to get somewhere because they feel like it's big ripoff. They'd either wait for someone to give them a ride (wasting time) or take the subway/bus and take 10x more time to get where they want to get. Prime example of how some people value money more than time.

I could fit your description. I mean, I don't mind dropping money on a wonderful life experience like a fantastic vacation, an insane party weekend or such. But in day to day life I'm cheap.

I am so for one reason; I want financial freedom. You don't get that by making money; you get it by putting it away and getting to a point in life where you don't spend your seed capital, only part of the dividends from it.

And $50 extra on a hotel when you only make low 6 digits is a lot. If you don't understand that, it is your loss, not mine.

Option 1: Take public transit ($2.50) and get there in 45 mins.

Option 2: Take a cab ($12.50) and get there in 10 mins.

What's more valuable here? The $10 that you can save from taking Option 1, or the 35 mins of your life that you can save by taking Option 2?

And this one while we're at it... again you're spending a week in New York... you have 2 options when it comes to accommodation...

Option 1: Get a hotel in Brooklyn for $150 a night (30 mins extra commute to Manhattan every day)

Option 2: Get a hotel in Manhattan for $200 a night.

Again what's more valuable here? Saving $50 a night or Having 30 mins of extra time every day to do whatever the fuck you want.

A vacation weekend where the point is your goal is the enjoyment of that vacation weekend is not normal spending habits.

Of course option 2 for both situations. My time is the most valuable resource I have. I'm cheap, not stupid.

I'm cheap on: laundry detergent, plates, cars, rent, bars, drinks, etc.

I mean, I do sometimes buy fancy shit (prociutto, imported beer, fancy liquors, top end 'green stuff', etc), but in general, I'm a penny pincher. Hell, when I stay at a hotel I take the klennex with me. In fast food places I take the napkins. To be more exact, I like to 'maximize' what I get from what I spend so I can become a free man someday and work only if and when I want.

I have no problem dropping thousands of dollars on a vacation; but I will save those $0.05 on the cheaper detergent and all the other shit you bitched about. I even make sure I make money off my CCs, since I get between 1-2% cash back (that adds up to a good $1k+/year) and pay cash before each cut off.

Because when you're doing something with a group of friends, and someone is being a cheap-ass, it ruins everyone's time. That's why. I couldn't care less how people spend their money in their private day to day life.

Ok, it's one thing to be cheap because you're a student or jobless. That I understand (kind of).. It's another thing to be cheap when you're making 6 figures a year. I just don't get it, why do some people like to hide their money and buy only the cheapest stuff they can get their hands on? You could tell the only thing that makes them happy is to look at their fat bank statement. It's always the same excuse they give you "I've got lots of things to pay!"... Don't we all? Is spending a $10 cover to get in the bar really gonna hurt you badly? Is talking on the phone a few more minutes (at $0.19 a minute) really gonna make you go broke? Is spending an extra $50 per night for a nicer hotel in a better location gonna make you have to mortgage your home?

Again I've had this problem with people making LOTS of money... not your average middle class guy

I would definatlly agree with you.

I would preffer getting options 2 for both of the above.

Imagine ( what are $2.5 compared to $10 ? ) well maybe you can buy some burger at burger king but will it be enough for you ? and remember you are in NY ... I personally have used bus only twice in my life and I hated it...

Being cheap is a very hard habit to break. Not sure why this is such a mystery, if you live most of your life worrying about money, you can't just instantly change once money is there. Cognitive dissonance can be a bitch. Some adapt quickly, others don't adapt at all, and the rest fall somewhere in the middle.
