Joomla or Wordpress ?

That's not entirely true. Sure, you can implement VirtueMart (or something equivalent) with Joomla...but options exist for WP as well. WP-commerce, YAK and a few others. Or, you can go the 3rd party cart route and use WP for the static product content and kick over to UltraCart or something similar for processing.

But overall wouldn't you agree that for an ecommerce site with a built in cart, Joomla would be the way to go? For the record I wouldn't touch VM.

Not really. If you want a good solution, use a real platform like Magento. If you have a need for a decent CMS too, WP and Magento can be implemented together relatively easily. Problem is, that's overkill for sites with only a handful of products (which in my opinion WP handles just fine). A lot of it is preference though.

takes 2 mins tops with most hosting providers who provide the fantastico feature. name it, submit it, done.

takes same amount of time to download and unzip and upload for wp if done manually.
 
Joomla was the first CMS I ever used and it was great at first but got real restrictive as I went on. The few sites I have now that run on it, I wish I could convert them to WP (and might eventually). I'd say Wordpress at this point, but anyone who's comfortable with PHP probably prefers to do it themselves.
