Just got a subpoena from my ISP...

Looks like a trap to me. I never got anything in the mail when my shit got subpoena'd. Maybe they sent you that letter because someone in nearby node is cloning your modem's MAC addy to do their pirating. Either way, looks like the only way you can lose is by objecting (admitting guilt) to it.
 


Btw, to all the guys saying that the open wifi defense is enough.. Most ISPs keep track of who's doing what with your connection at all times. They can look back at any specific point in time and see anything from your connected device's name/mac addy to your router's make/model/serial/mac addy/etc.
 
You didn't do anything stupid like participating in the recent DDOS attack on PayPal/MC, right?
Cause if you did, then you could be looking at much more serious problems than copyright infringement fines.
 
if it came certified mail... which I doubt very much... why would they want details that they already have... secondly when are you going to court... last time I checked the subpoena cannot request such information... in fact it is a fake document if that information is requested... how can it be served... really... think dumbass...

here is a hint... checkout subpoena on wiki... it is for court... you would be required to attend on a certain date...

they're delivered in person. Not by cops, but by people whos job it is to serve people.

This sounds like a scam. Either that or your ISP is retarded. Just give them a call. That's the only way to find out what they want. Asking peeps on wf will not get your questions answered.
 
Dump your PC in the lake ASAP and buy another one.
Open your wifi connection and tell them you suspect someone near you may have been using your wifi. You didnt know better, and now you want them to show you how to set it up for you. I cant see how anyone would be fucked for anything Internet related unless they break into your home and take your PC for evidence. Unless you used your CC to buy kiddie porn. Whats keeping Joe that Lives next door to Jack, from Jacks Open wireless wifi connection and sayn he is Jack? Remember they have to prove YOU did it. Unless they have your PC to be able to track its you, or if they have YOU on video tape doing what they suspect you did, they have no case.
Come on, murders roam the streets cuz they cant find a body or a murder weapon.
You think they can just say it was you cuz of your IP?...LOL
Dump the PC and get a lawyer... !

First thing you do when someone shows up your door asking for you. You say, what does this involve. When they say, we have a certified letter for so and so. You say, oh, they are not here and I'm not authorized to sign for anything. You can't respond to something you don't have. In my other life in real estate, our company would do this all the time.

However, once you receive it, you more than likely have to respond. If you don't, as someone else mentioned, they can get a judgment against you. Depending on what they are asking for.

Also, I had something similar happen to me. I was downloading a torrent for some 'learn to speak some language' a few years ago. Not even 2 hours after I attempted to download it, our ISP called my office saying they got a call from the publisher that someone was trying to illegally download their files. And if it happened again, they would sue.

I always thought they went after the uploaders and not the downloaders?
 
I know a few people at the learn to speak a foreign language software company I think you are referring to.. They are amazingly aggressive at protecting their software ;)
 
OP, do you use the encryption setting on your utorrent/bittorrent? Or what were you using to transfer files mainly?

I hope you're joking. If not, this is probably the worst advice I've ever heard. Quit watching CSI and spend some time in the real world.
