If you think you've seen it all, take a break and watch this. This documentary will shock you, guaranteed. Syria, Lybia, Iraq, Afghanistan... all this is Child's play compared to what's going on in Liberia. (not in terms of casualties, but in terms of how horrific the crimes are and the general state of the country)

Liberia is truly one of the worst (if not THE worst) place on earth, and guess what, it ain't a muslim country. lol

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRuSS0iiFyo]The Cannibal Warlords of Liberia (Full Length Documentary) - YouTube[/ame]

Highlights:

- Soldiers eat children's hearts before going to war
- No sewage systems, people shit on the streets, beaches and pretty much everywhere.
- 70%+ of women getting regularly raped
- Careless government, corrupt police
- UN soldiers raping kids

HELL ON MOTHERFUCKING EARTH GUYS.

Also this shows how religion can be a good thing. That General Buttnaked went from eating children and being the leader of a ruthless cannibal army, to an evangelist that is now helping thousands of child soldiers change their lives through the bible.

must not have any natural resources we can exploit.

They used to be the world's largest exporter of rubber, they started clearcutting the landscape to grow rubber trees. Eventually nothing would grow there anymore.

Yeah we need more guys like him in the world!

Now the million dollar question: what role did America have in this mess? (Liberia is also known as the Little America in Africa)

To those who didn't know, Liberia was supposed to be the new home of freed American slaves. The U.S. shipped thousands of them.

I believe Liberia is where Lincoln wanted to deport blacks to after they were freed, because he didn't think they were compatible with whites.

Also, I think Liberia has or had an American style government, or one modeled on the US Constitution iirc.

Pretty much yes. It was created by and for freed African slaves in the early 1800s:

Along with Ethiopia, Liberia is one of only two modern countries in Sub-Saharan Africa without roots in the European colonization of Africa. Beginning in 1820, the region was colonized by blacks from the United States, most of whom were freed slaves. These immigrants established a new country with the help of the American Colonization Society, a private organization which believed that former slaves would have greater freedom and equality in Africa. African captives freed from slave ships were also sent there instead of being repatriated to their countries of origin. In 1847, this new country became the Republic of Liberia, establishing a government modeled on that of the United States and naming its capital city Monrovia after James Monroe, the fifth president of the United States and a prominent supporter of the colonization. The colonists, known as Americo-Liberians, led the political and economic sectors of the country.

Your use of that semicolon; intrigues me.

I was actually extremely conflicted when deciding on proper punctuation in that instance. And then I just said "Fuck it, how often does one get to use a semi-colon anyway?"

So a region populated by thousands of freed slaves has resulted in a violent and brutal society... who would have thunk?!?

This is really, really sad and I'm not talking about the punctuation in this thread.

I have to agree with avatar about Christianity being useful here. You figure ok primitive culture, they already believe in something larger than them but that specific something is appently pro rape and murder. Give them a more peaceful set of rules, and a different SOMETHING to fear so they will play nice = win.

I will qualify that with this though: I think the General knew his days were numbered and hid behind the cross. Was a reputation management decision to stay alive.

So if they already believe in rape and murder, why would we need to introduce religion; most of which include murder on a mass scale?

Why not just preach ideas of non-aggression and peace without all the other bullshit that accompanies religion? Like Christianity for instance, it teaches coercion (you must do x,y,z or burn in hell forever), it shows a God that has committed mass murder more than once.. Why the fuck do you need religion to teach peace?

You don't, because religion is pretty far from peace, being one of the main cases of death historically speaking.
