Whilst it makes sense for LPs with multiple offers to have the links open in new windows (so they can read about and complete the second offer too) what is the general consensus when it comes to LPs with only one offer?

I've always had my offer links open in a new window, but I recently started testing having the link stay in the same window. Somewhat surprisingly my conversion rates did not really change.

I was thinking this might be because people with slow computers automatically close new windows. Or maybe popup blockers...?

Does anyone have any experience in testing this that they're willing to share? I'll post some figures once I've tested this for a few days but I'm interested to hear what people have to say about this.

I don't think pop up blockers will stop links opening in new windows (assuming that your using target="_blank") and not another way of opening the window. If there's only a single offer then I wouldn't have thought it would make much difference?

I tried links to new windows long ago. It was a bad idea. People just kept closing the new pages.

my .02

But... the majority of LPs you see out there have their links opening in new windows. My tests so far have proven inconclusive. Conversions fluctuating like normal. Nothingsignificant to speak of.

note that if you're cloaking links w/ 202 and offering more than 1 product on a page (either review w/ multiples or where you're trying to sell multiple products) if you don't target=_blank out new windows users can have a hell of a time getting back to your landing page since the back button will only re-load the offer page and most peole aren't smart enough to hold down the back button to see the list of options and then navigate back to your LP.

I think people are closing the windows because they've gotten so used to getting hit with popunders that now, anything opening in a new window triggers that reaction.

Similar to the way they go for the power cord when they hit a dickroll.

target="_blank" is a new tab in all the latest browsers, and my split tests have shown it to perform better. Depending on your demographic, users should be smart/comfortable enough switching between tabs to re-read your LP and then switch up to convert. Beats having them use the back button.

Anyways, it's not like this would make or break a campaign, so just test it out once you're doin some good profits and volume.

I've had this thought before as well. To be honest, it seems like my findings are about the same as yours. Both tend to come up with around the same conversion rates. Although, I do usually throw in some text, like "(This link will open in a new, secure window)," which tends to make the conversion stay around the same.

I guess it mainly depends on whether you want them to find your site again (maybe bookmark it?), or go on their way after grabbing whatever your promoting.. (maybe on a shadier offer?)

Opening a new window does NOT reset any "back button history". This comment alone makes me instantly think the rest of this article is worthless. There's not back button history because the new window has never been to any other pages. It can't go back...that's like complaining I don't have a back button history when I first open my browser!
