That is because the government has no competition, and so without competitive forces to incentivize profit seeking, customer satisfaction, long term capital management, government is an epic fail.People complain about taxes being too high, then complain about having to wait 3 hours at the DMV to get a license because half of the DMV office was let go, and they don't have enough workers. Unlike many businesses, the government (state, national, local) seem to forget about stockpiling money from surpluses to help in worse economic times, and instead increase spending unnecessarily or give short term tax breaks.
A business run badly, loses customers and goes bankrupt. A badly run government agency fails, and they get a budget increase.
The incentives are all wrong. If the DMV was privatized and the contracts tendered competitively, there would be very short lines.
