It's perfectly fine to say "the ends justify the means" if you are ONLY talking about yourself, but when you start applying that idea to other people, and their lives, you veer off into totalitarianism pretty quickly.

It's without question that today we have lowest ever levels of violence, highest ever availability & affordability of food, best ever healthcare and highest ever lifespan. In the US, and in pretty much 99% of the world. Especially compared to fucking 1903.
You might be right in that in the US we're less free than we were in 1903 (might not be the case - ask black people). And you might be right that for some people, the things I list above might be secondary to freedom.
But - and this may shock you - most people would choose to be able to eat food rather than not have public debt. In other words, when faced with a choice between basic necessities or freedom, most people (save the ideologist few) would rather they have a diminished level of freedom than not be able to afford food.
You're right that some people might prefer 1850's level of living so that they can have 1850's level of freedom. You might be one of them, but I assure you you're among the few who would.
