You really need to do a better job separating relative freedom in you mind from technological achievement. They have little to do with each other, excepting only the fact that if your markets aren't free (like they haven't been in the USA for way over 100 years) then your pace of technological achievement is stunted.

The problem with human beings is that we don't live very long. So, unfortunately, we are doomed to frame all of our ideas within the narrow scope of our life-limited conceptions.
Many, many times in the past we've set off down one path or another, and the cultural zeitgeist of the day proclaimed "PROGRESS!" as we marched off. Only in hindsight can we see that many of those excursions lead to dead ends, or worse, and a lot of backtracking was needed to get back on the right path.
The people who followed those shitty paths have largely been forgotten, because their ideas were bad, their methods were inferior, and their results were lacking...however, don't think for a second that every last one of them wasn't wholeheartedly convinced that they were leading the way for all of humanity up until the very end.
Neither you or I is going to live long enough to know if our ideas are right or wrong, but it's kind of fun to argue about it in the meantime.
I absolutely agree. I'm not a follower of any ideology - even further, I'm convinced that there aren't any right 'sides'.
All communities (websites, forums even more so) have a tendency to support a certain political ideology. And with time, certain populist opinions from that political camp start being parroted on the community all the time and start being accepted as The Truth whereas in the real world the matter is still totally up for debate.
I don't like this when it happens. Reddit for example is full of hipster wannabe broke ass lazy college students who blame rich people, 'the establishment' and Republicans for everything. I fucking hate that and the comments I make there make me look like something between Glenn Beck and Hitler.
And as you'd expect, here, in the forum where pretty much everyone is a business owner and no one gives a shit about political correctness, it's the other way around. (Although I can safely say the average IQ here is about 200 points higher than reddit) So when the same thing happens here and I make a comment, I sound like a leftist.
