Oh, Oklahoma...

I'm almost surprised that many students even know who Nixon is.

It appears 11% of school students equate Democrats to Communists .... interesting.

Sometimes I wonder if they fuck up these tests on purpose. Think about their age and how many tests a week they get. Most are probably already in a "Fuck the System" mentality (I know I was) So some guy comes along and says "Take this test, it won't go on your public record but just answer the questions the best you can" Maybe this is their middle finger to authority and more testing. Maybe they really should have a category that says "fuck off" next to "I don't know."

By the way, I did this once on a standardized test. It was third grade and it felt like we were getting these stupid state testing and federal testing every other week. So I made a design out of the bubble answers. I chuckle now to think that some official somewhere said Wow this person is seriously retarded. I was never a good artist either so no one would have known that I was being creative. :D

QFT.

I teach them - believe me, if they don't have to pass to graduate, they don't care.

Personally, I think the biggest problem with the public school system is there's no emphasis on money. You basically have to take accounting as an elective to get even a hint of money management and that doesn't even go into the various ways to earn it, make it work for itself, entrepeneurship, etc... Anything not related to going to college, incurring massive debt, and becoming a wage slave for the next 45 years (before the failure of the social security system) of your life while the sum of your labors make some one else wealthy is frowned upon or simply not discussed.

Why the fuck is that little concept not included along with math, social studies and english lit (obviusly more important since it was a yearly requirement in my HS)?

Apparently it's just Oklahoma.

I'm in Springfield, MO. (just a few hours over the border) and our local news picked up this story. They interviewed some high school students from one of the schools here and over 85% knew who the first president was. Over 50% passed the test with 6 or more questions right.

They don't have the interviews up yet, but I'm sure they'll add it later tonight.

I know we sure as hell did. I remember one "drug use" survey they gave everyone back in high school.
According to that thing a significant percentage of our school used "curare"...which is what was used in south america to make poison darts for hunting. It was obviously crap, but we just didn't care about whatever it was they were trying to do.

I'm sure that's what they did. I mean shit. Even crackheads know GWB wasnt the first president

^^Heh. maybe they were actually insulted by the question. I can see them going, "Shit even crackheads know GWB wasn't the first president" They really should offer incentive with these tests. Every answer you get right that's a credit at the itune store.

haha...

So I just saw the newscast and they said the same test was given to high school kids in Missouri. Out of 1,000 students who took the test, 97% passed with at least 7/10 correct answers.

In a welfare society and with increasing socialism in most western nations, there is no incentive to be smart. The smartest students are punished by being asked to carry more of society's load to make up for the less intelligent. After a while, the intelligent begin to ape the behaviour of the stupid, so that they can fit in and be accepted, knowing that there are no consequences for failure. On the contrary under such a flawed set of incentives, failing is rewarded with a free ride.

^ The increased "socialism" of late has mostly benefited banks, CEO's, wall street people, etc.
I'm not talking about isolated periods of time. I am talking about what has been historically true under socialist regimes.

Have you ever noticed, that almost all innovation comes from countries where the markets are relatively freer than elsewhere? That the Soviets and Cubans have made very few contributions to technology or culture since 1950?

As far as fascism, which is what you are talking about, it is just another form of socialism. There is no such thing as institutional socialism for the people, it always serves a narrow ruling or politically connected class. True socialism for the people are free markets, where everyone is allowed to keep what they earn, and engage in any business they please without begging for a license. That is how you bring down the big boys. Let everyone compete with them by removing barriers to entry. An economy with "too big to fails" is a sign of oligopoly, not capitalism.

It seemed like you were inferring that a large percent of Oklahoma students were refusing to learn because they were already planning on never working and getting welfare. If you look at any list of rankings for education, the USA trails many other nations that would be considered more socialist. It would be much easier for more kids in these countries to sit back and get a "free ride", but that's not the reality.

I'll stick with the dictionary definitions for "fascism" and "socialism." The USA is still rather far off from fitting either of those.

I agree that free markets are best for innovation. Germany has done well with their social market economy, though, and back when they were fascist they had plenty of technological innovation. Cuba is small. The USSR was a super power for many years, so it had to have some type of innovation coming out of there. Scanning the wiki for Russia reveals things like "a long tradition of education, science, and industry. The country has more higher education graduates than any other country in Europe." and "Russia has the largest stockpile of nuclear weapons in the world. It has the second largest fleet of ballistic missile submarines and is the only country apart from the U.S. with a modern strategic bomber force." And they invented Tetris, lol.
