I have not been online for a while... had my laptop die on me... Got a Toshiba A500... totally dead... overheated and has been in getting repaired under warranty... has anyone else here had this issue??? it is a month on and still no laptop or decent response from toshiba...

any feedback or comments about laptops overheating and toshiba's lame warranty system?:angryfire:

I've had a laptop fan blow out. It would overheat after about 20 mins and shut down. It would turn back on after it cooled, though. I sent it in, they replaced the fan, and it blew out again. It's sitting on a shelf.

I think it took over a month for me to get it back. I wouldn't worry about it.

In my experience, it's usually the fan or the heat sink. The Toshiba Satellite I'm on right now, one of my friends threw it away because it kept overheating. but everytime he got it repaired, it would just keep doing it.

I but a new fan from ebay and blew out the vent with a can of air. Then I replaced the hard drive because the heat had warped it.

Then the bastard kept trying to get his working laptop back.

yea just surprised given the laptop is under 9 months old... what even makes it worse is the fact that there has been no official response from toshiba as to what is happening...

I figure they will probably end up replacing the stupid thing but it is just annoying that as a primary machine for home / work I have to wait on something that really is a 10 minute decision.

haha no long after making that post, my fan started sounding like a revving motorcycle. ain't that a bitch?

A buddy of mine had a similar problem but here's a cheap fix. First a squirt of copper based heat paste between the CPU and the heatsink - then use a thin layer of styrofoam (cut from a burger takeaway box or something) just under the cover when you replace it to make sure that it is TIGHT and that the heatsink is pushed TIGHTLY against the CPU for maximim heat dissipation.

- My Acer laptop one day decided to throw a party and put up a spark show which grilled the mainboard. It was a funky experience and it was my last Acer.

- My Sony Vaio just recently failed miserably trying to get on the very same party: with a flickering screen. It only lasted a few seconds and then went dark forever. Very disappointed.

- both parties happened within weeks AFTER the guarantee had expired.

<3 laptops

Denarian - It sounds like yours is like mine... a bit of a lemon.... I have ordered a http://www.antec.com/Believe_it/product.php?id=NzE5 and from what I have read they are awesome for cooling...

Wildgunner - I had a ASUS laptop before this one and she worked a treat until she died... old age got the better of it. so I would recommend one of them... Apparently Fujitsu have nice ones now a days also...

TheCrabb - I would happily have attempted that if it was not in Toshiba's (Or should I say "To Shit Ba's") hands...

Bobsoap - I stayed clear of both Acer and Sony for the very reasons you mentioned. I have seen alot of pissed off customers of Acer and Sony... Not sure why but Acer have always been a pain and full of dodgie gear... Sony, usually they are ok except their laptops from experience and reading reviews have been dodgie as hell...

I have a Vaio and the fan went and the only way to fix it is to send it off to them at a high cost (out of guarantee). Can't even buy a replacement for this model as Sony are the only ones who sell them. I officially HATE Sony. Have had so many other problems with this "top of the range" laptop I can't even start to tell you. Never buy a Vaio!!!

nickster... have to say I am not surprised about that with Sony... in saying that it really sucks about the costing.... I have been doing a lot of reading on laptops and cooling issues... it seems that they are only really starting to realise the issues with cooling now that people are suffering this issue big time. I just found out that if they replace the laptop (which is likely according to a toshiba service agent in the states) the model I have they no longer stock however they did say that people should consider getting a cooling pad....

I orderd the antec one I mentioned earlier on... once I get it I will be letting people know... I think for 50 odd bucks cannot go wrong...

Not a fan boy but the only pc's I've ever owned other than the ones I've built myself were all HP's. Very few problems -- hell I've got a 4 year old hp pavilion laptop that still gets used almost daily.

My kids have stood on it, dropped it, etc... still going. I've got a very old pc in the basement (win 98) that my kids still use to stream music when they are hanging out down there, etc...

Maybe I've just been lucky - i'm sure there are HP lemons too. But I use the crap out of my pc's till I can't upgrade them anymore.

stmadeveloper as a rule I am with you when it comes to PC's... build them myself and no problems. I have a amd 5600+, 4gb ram, dual nvidia 9600s, 1tb raid 1 and it has been running for about 2-3 years now without 1 issue... laptop I am now on to my 3rd in the same time...

its like unless you build them yourself you cannot trust them...personally I wouldn't touch hp but hey if that toots your horn why not...

ive got like 8 laptops ( old and new ) and never a fan prob/overheat prob. About the only thing wrong ever was 1 HP that Vista kept fucking up and it was a ram prob.

The biggest problem I've noticed is with poorly located breathing vents. Some vents, like many ACERs & Toshibas, are right on the bottom of the damn machine - so if you put them on your lap, or flat on a desk they can't get air-flow to the vents.

I have a small desktop fan I turn on my HD area whenever I get paranoid about the heat. It's overkill, but heat is what ruins most HDs.

IMHopeful I do not know why they could not provide better cooling in their case design... I figure it is probably because of technology demand vs consumers wants with everything small to meet their day to day lives....

they should not put such strong v/c and processors in to lappies I guess...
