Overheated Laptops

I have a nine year old dell d600. The vents are on the bottom and the backside (no pun intended). Looking at more modern laptops leads me to nothing but conspiracy theories. Bigger hard drives + spinning faster + creating more heat - proper cooling = more burned up laptops/hard drives.

I'm not much for theorizing shit like that, but why do most modern laptop designs choke the air off? I think it has to be a little purposeful. It's like not putting vent holes in front of a radiator on a car.

ya i had a dell 9400 inspiron once with a monster graphics card in it and that shit was warmmmm...

after 1 year the graphics card started getting fucked up. artifacts on the screen and all kinds of errors. Dell made me pay for the repair... 2 weeks later the new graphics card gets fucked too.

Funny thing is, Dell ended up paying me that repair money 2 years later back after a good amount of swearing towards their twitter guy.

Laptops are pretty fucked up when it comes to this. Gotta admit tho that I've been lucky with Vaio's and MacBooks so far

ImHopeful I can see where you are coming from.... some good points...

Eliquid - I must have miscommunicated my point but good to see target sells something worth mentioning.... what I meant was did you find it to be a good machine?

Do a search on 'barebone laptop'. You can customize your own, if your into that sort of thing. Basically like what eliquid is talking about with his mixed machine - You start out with a keyboard in a stripped case and build from there.

My old Celeron Toshiba laptop ("the celery") kept overheating - a persistent problem. Toshiba addressed the issue with a firmware update which helped some, but shutdowns persisted all summer. I finally sold it at Ebay, making the celery the next guy's problem.

For work I use an old Intel Macbook with a faster processor, yet there is no fan noise and it never overheats. It also cost a lot more. In my view, overheating = cheaply made.

I never use a laptop without a base that lifts it off the desk for air circulation.

are you usually sitting in the water when you do that?

get thinkpad.. :cool2:

In my experience Thinkpads do not bounce well. That took mine out - dropped off a table - IN a padded backpack - and that was it.

I've had 9 or so laptops in my life. All of them were Dells except for 1 Thinkpad and 1 Compaq.

Never had any of these kinds of problems with any of the Dells.

One problem you are going to have with almost any pc you "BUY" off the shelf is crap parts - they do everything they can to keep their costs down.

I recently built a new pc - quad core, nice expandable case, quality power supply, etc... with operating system (win7) it was about 875. Took about an hour to put together.

The same specs for a pc really weren't available anywhere else other than the gaming pc systems for less than 2k.

I'd be a little afraid to try and build a laptop though - I've never even opened one up.

Toshiba L 350

Well I have one and my cpu fan broke after 8 months ordered a new one and put in... But its still a piece of shit, i have it in my knee now and its cooking my balls and IM pretty sure this fan will blow soon as well. got the shitty laptop on insurance claim...

Around 2 weeks ago my laptop reached 100 degrees Celcius and it got the BSOD about 5 minutes later. I have no clue why it happened, but since then it's been running fine.

I have done some research and the fans dont even have enough bearings in them by default... not only that but they can be easily stopped by a small amount of dust. they need to have better fans put in.... I got a call from the courier just now telling me they have lost the actual laptop.... Apparently they have tracked it down to who had it last so it is just a matter of tracking it down from there. If I do not get a response in 4 days... I get a new laptop... I told them if I do get a new lappy I want a new warranty for it also... they didn't even argue...

Let's get a Macbook Pro.

I have been using Windows system laptop for so many years.

Once I switched to Macbook Pro last year, I never want to look at any Windows system laptop anymore.

Disclaimer: I am NOT a Apple Staff... not advertising... just personal opinion LOL

billgratton - good to hear you enjoy your macbook pro... personally I do not trust anything electronical named after a fruit.

last time I checked electronic devices and water do not mix...

we wont hold it against you being an apple fan... alot of people are with very clever marketing by apple.
