I thought it was a pretty cool idea to cash in on popular search terms with little to no competition on adwords such as current events (Ellen DeGeneres, David Copperfield etc)

Thought it was cool, until I tried it and saw the numbers. I'm surprised anyone is making money with this method..

I ran this type of campaign for a few popular news items this month and got about the same results each time.

Typically about 50% or less of the people who visited, would actually click the voting buttons.

Out of that 50%, only about 15% would complete the zip/email submit.

So if you paid $1.20 for 120 hits (very hard to get 1 cent clicks on google) and 50% of those people voted and saw your offer, and only 15% of those people convert in to leads, you're only going to be getting 0.9 leads on average for those 120 visits ((120*0.5)*0.15) = 0.9 and with a zip submit being about $1.20 (from my experience) you would only be getting 0.9*1.20 or $1.08 return on $1.20 investment.

So, how do you get more people to actually vote, how do you get lead conversion up and is it even possible to get 1 cent clicks to begin with?

Seems too thin of a margin to me.

I wanted to test this out so when anna nicole smith died I threw up a blog with some posts and put adsense on it within an hour of the news breaking that she died. Well I used adcenter and had .10 cents a click (lowest bid) for the keyword like anna nicole died and I had something like 2k clicks in 24 hours. I had a few people that commented on it and had only like 30 or 40 dollars in adsense clicks. I don't think I used the traffic as best as it could have been but I had a 200 dollar promo for adcenter so I really didn't care about the money. I just wanted to test it out.

I did this with Britney Spears for about an hour. I got top positions for 10 cent minimum on Yahoo. I think I paid out like 10 bucks and made 2.80 before I decided I wasn't going to put anymore time or money into something that wasn't long term. I'm sure if you put in enough effort for long enough, you can get good at these, but it's not as easy as it sounds.

If you only put one offer on your landing page, you're doing it wrong. These things are built for the content network to get the cheap clicks. BUT you almost have to anticipate the news and have something before hand to really cash in.

Yeah I've just seen so many people, including people running similar ads on adwords put up a site with only the YES or NO buttons linked to an affiliate site. (What about someone who doesnt know or wants to click maybe?)

This definitely isn't the most efficient way to monetize these sites apparently. So what is?

The only other more professional/probably more lucrative spin I've seen put on this is a site like sodahead.com. Provides a lot more user interactivity including a real poll, and comments and really seems to be more of a way to promote their site in general than turn a quick buck.

I'm just really surprised I've seen so much hype about this technique on this and other forums making it seem like its the most simple thing you can do.

I've also seen people complain that QS killed this technique, however even at 1 cent per click it's still a small margin.

Well I don't know anything about adwords and I've easily gotten 5 cent or less minimum bids on popular keywords easily..

Care to tell us how you monetized the traffic?

Ha.. I like this thread already!

If it doesn't work for you, then stay out of it. I am glad people are getting discouraged and not doing this anymore. Just means more for me in the long run.

If you try this method once and at least don't break even, you are not putting enough into to it to make it profitable. Too many people want to throw the site up and the voting buttons and call it a day. Its a little more than just a landing page, buttons directly to advertiser and bidding on a few keywords.

Like any real technique, you need to put some effort into it and put a spin on it. Do you really think the guy that let this out gave you everything you need to make $$$$ off it? Hell no.

Jeez people, this aint 2001 anymore.

The reason you're not getting people to convert or vote is probably because your landing page blows, or is put together to "obviously monetize" ie- Yes & No Buttons both just send you to the same offer.
A whole lot of people are just going to close the offer because thats all that came up when they voted (probably FREE offers)

Ad copy?

Just keep not doing it...

No real advice? You asked "Are people making money with this?" The answer is "YES".

The only question is are you too stupid/lazy/just don't give a fuck to make it happen for you.

That's the only question here, and you're the only person on this forum who can answer that one for you.

If it doesn't work, learn from it, and keep working on it until it does.

Ya, a few people said they're making money. Big help.

Guess I'm just too stupid/lazy/don't give a fuck.

Or you need cheaper clicks... There are TONS of threads on WF and in the blog world about quality Score. Get an excellent QS, get some 1-3 cent clicks and laugh all the way to the bank.

dude. you can't see the advice?

A) Look at your landing page. What can you do to make it more condusive to the ACTION you are looking for and to make it look legit? Do some A/B testing and I bet you can increase your vote rate, CTR etc etc etc.

B) Scale that shit out across 10000 keywords, automate and grow.
you are making a 33% margin? 0.90 = 1.20? optimize the landing page, scale it out and boom.

the advice is there, maybe you are just too lazy to look for it and understand it?

Show us your LP.

Guess I'm just too stupid/lazy/don't give a fuck.

Maybe so. That's the problem with most people.

In case that's not your problem, maybe you should try asking different questions.

A good one might be "Why are my offers converting at less than 1/120 when some people have offers converting at better than 1/5?"

To answer your .01 bid question, no, 99% of the time I can't get any traffic for .01 a click. If I had to get .01 clicks to make this work, I wouldn't mess with it. I've made money with zips paying over .10 a click though.

Your problem is that your conversion rate sucks. All they need to do is enter a zip code for you to get paid. So the real question is how can you get more than 1/125 visitors to enter a zip code?

And that's where not being too lazy/stupid to experiment comes in to play.

I ran this type of campaign for a few popular news items this month and got about the same results each time.
If you're getting these types of results every time, you're definitely doing something wrong. Change it up.

So, how do you get more people to actually vote, how do you get lead conversion up and is it even possible to get 1 cent clicks to begin with?

Well, those were the only questions that seemed relevant.

I don't expect people to be coming out of the woodwork to give me ideas they've worked hard to achieve, just a discussion on the topic.

Also I thought it might help to have a little reality check on the subject. From every post I've read on this subject everyone's made it out to be the easiest thing you can do.

Here's a tip I use to maximize conversions from landing page to zip submit page:

Pick a zip submit page with a nice blinking arrow next to the zip entry field. Use that exact same blinking arrow next to the vote button on your landing page. As long as it is a recognizable arrow that stands out from the rest of the boring, static page, your viewer's eyes will see it next to the vote button and then their eyes will go right to it as soon as the zip page loads. All they will see is the arrow, and "please enter your zip". 20% of the time (for me), the person just puts their zip in. It's all about guiding their eyes, a blinking arrow can do that.
