So I get up $325k to reno my house and the stupid contractor revises the quotes to $425k. It's day 4 since getting this shoved in my face and I'm still pissed.

So another six months of working really hard to dig up $75k which will go to some contractor but not that one.

My stupid roof on my house is leaking so I can't put off renos forever.

And I'm thinking when I was 23 and living in a flophouse with 6 other people of which 4 were drunks, with no money for food, life was a helluva easier. And MUCH simpler.

Jeepers, and I HAVE TO DO MORE TAX WORK AGAIN. Just did my corporate and now I have to calculate my t4s and then it's my personal tax.

Pile on you bastards, pile on.

Lol its all about the "change orders". If your going to get these renovations done you may want to look into the term. Something changed and or happened at the and that's why your quote changed. That or the contractor actually put the pencil to paper. And why are you putting up all of your cash on renovations? And whatever price your quoted you should prepare yourself for these changes its not uncommon to have your bill go up during construction 10 to 20% over budget. You need to discuss these change orders with any prospective contractor. Its usually the lowball estimate that makes it up after starting the job with these unforeseen "change orders"

Get quotes from other contractors or at least tell this one that you are going to do that.

If you can't afford the project going slightly over budget, don't get such an expensive project.

You get zero sympathy from me. You tried to go above your means and are paying for it.

If you tell the contractor to eat it, just be sure that the 75k is not valid. If it is valid, and he eats it than he could compensate for his loss by giving you less quality, stretching the time frame etc.. and you may end up having to pay more than 75k on legal, and hiring a new contractor to complete the job right. That big of a change from the original price suggests one of the following:

1. He added wrong
2. He quoted low to get the job than bumped it up.
3. There were "behind the wall" factors that were unforeseen and the bump could be legitimate.

If it was #1, well allot of contractors can't add.
If it was #2, fire him.
If it was #3, this could be legitimate (depending on what was behind the walls and if it was really unforeseen and really worth 75K), and any other contractor would have probably done the same.

I am assuming that you got 3 bids before going with the current guy, so if he falls out than just bring another bidder or go with whoever was your second choice.

Guarantee its #3 and OP went with the lowest estimate. I would even be willing to bet the other 2 estimates were for close to the 425 that the other contractors quoted. whats the rest of the story OP? There is more to the story that you forgot to mention in your post

After re-reading - contractor bumped it up 100K. And OP saved an additional 75K? There are missing pieces to this story. I hate STS, instead of working to pay some contractor to fix my house, I'm wasting my time on this shit. I'm out - thanks for the motivation OP. :stonedsmilie:

You win teh prize.

OP subtlely disguises a rant as a brag about home no doubt valued in the low mils. Wants a pat on the back. Thread backfire

LOL Homeownership, homeownership LOL.
This.

You must have a lot of money if you are spending $325k to renovate a durable consumer good.

In related news, a man spent $4000 to convert his bicycle into a tricycle.

things I've learned ITT:

being a homo(ner) can get expensive.
sometimes contractors will try to take advantage of you if you are a homo(ner).
OP is a homo(ner).
there is not much sympathy for homo(ner)s on Gay Webmaster forums.
