Atheist/agnostic here, and I gotta +10000 here. Religion is each person's choice; stop meddling in other peoples affairs. If I want to believe in a purple unicorn creating the universe, I have that right. Same applies for anyone who wants to think that Jesus Christ is their lord and savior. I've never seen a thread so full of fail AND win at the same time. Some very well put arguments but also some blatent ignorance from both sides. I'll just give my simple opinion instead of trying to correct all the mistakes. (I have actually studied the bible, koran and bhagavad gita as well as Dawkins, Hawkings, Sagan etc - not just the convenient bits)

The jews belive they know the truth because of a book written 3500 years ago. They will not change thier beliefs because they KNOW they are right.

The christians believe they know the truth because of an addendum to that book written 1500 years after. They will not change thier beliefs because they KNOW they are right.

The Muslims believe they know the truth because of a compilation of the previouse 2 books written a few hundred years after that. They will not change thier beliefs because they KNOW they are right.

We athiests are pretty sure they are right based on scientific observation of all available facts. We will indeed change our beliefs in the light of new evidence. Something that no organised religion has been able to supply even the smallest piece of, yet science continues to bring exciting new facts to the fore on an almost daily basis.

The LHC at Cern collided particles at 7 TeV last week - godless scientists have just discovered some of the most complete hominid skeletons ever at the Cradle of Mankind in South Africa (here - practically in my backyard!).

I don't claim to know everything, but I continue to learn and seek the truth rather than accepting ancient and out dated religious dogma.

see, I'm pretty glad to say that I live in a state where I can opt out of paying church taxes and my company gets taxed at max 25%, at best 11%. Churches here take care of homeless people and organize blood donation rallies, so it's not like they're not helping the community either. Also, direct democracy ftw.

There are no stats worldwide on any level that detail the abuse rate of any group, especially drilled down to the 'school', 'church', or 'home' levels.

Historically, the Catholic Church has been full of pedophiles and homosexuals, because who else would renounce all sexual relations with a woman? You can't put a requirement like that on priests and only expect normal, heterosexual males. In fact, you shouldn't expect many at all.

Priests don't renounce sex, they abstain. IF you knew anything about the church or priesthood you'd know it's not punitive that a priest not marry/have sex, it's a spiritual abstinence for the purpose of having a closer relationship to God, and serving their parish/diocese to the best of their ability.

1. Love for one another
2. Faith in a Higher Power gets you through
3. There is some form of redemption

Every single human in any religion is just that, human, and people ignore their higher power all the fucking time, hence the abuse that ALL churches have endured, not just the Catholic church.
