Police Shoot Knife-Wielding Man in Wheelchair - CBS News

SF police chief defends officers who shot man

He wasn't confined to the wheel chair. Witnesses said he was able to get up and walk around.

He had been slashing tires prior to this.

The person receiving medical attention to their arm was a cop he stabbed.

They first pepper sprayed him, then shot him with a bean bag round and then shot him in the groin when he threw the knife.

He deserved everything he got and he will live.

These are some amazingly useless cops.

Doubtful.

Blows my mind how people can agree with police shooting non dangerous people. There is no threat at the time they shoot the man.

A knife is considered a deadly weapon by every police force in the world and more often than not someone wielding one is going to get shot if they don't comply. In this case he hurled the knife at the cops the moment after he was beanbagged and two of them decided that was enough of a threat at that split second to warrant shooting him. Not the best decision since he was no longer armed, hence my previous comment about useless cops, but throwing a knife at a police officer isn't very smart either.

If the guy slashed a cop in the arm that guy doesn't fall into my "non dangerous people" column. I guess I just lack the ability to empathize with stupid criminals, consider it a character flaw if you must.

Seattle police just some deaf guy recently who was a woodcarver, dude had his knife on him or in his hand. 5 shots. PRetty tough polices....

guess the police had the right to shoot so they did..
Its not a right, rather a justification.
Granted, the shots were not the BEST way out of the situation, everyone can agree on that.
At the same time. How is it known he is unarmed after throwing the knife? For those of you posting he was unarmed after throwing the knife, how could you be certain? It is impossible to determine.
As soon as this mother fucker became a lethal threat (really, just wielding a knife at ANYONE) the police are justified to use deadly force to preserve life.

Like I said, not the BEST way out... But Shit, I think would have shot his ass too.

I guess you could say the victim was on the edge of his seat.

The guy died: Family: Man shot by police was deaf in left ear

Birk, 27, stopped his patrol car and activated his emergency lights after investigators said he saw Williams working with the knife on a board.

It's funny they call that a confrontation. "HEY DROP THE KNIFE!" *shoots guy five times*

Edit:
The Police Department's Firearms Review Board found that the shooting was not justified.
Birk was ordered to surrender his gun and badge. An inquest into Williams' shooting death is set to begin on Jan. 10.

Should shot the guy one time on the shoulder or somewhere else. The Guy already turned his back why still shoot him? You can easily smash him with a gun in the back of the head and take him to prison or something like that.... taking about Power Trip.. This cops have it.

An unarmed man in a wheelchair (past actions aside) is not dangerous, maybe that's just me.

That's just it, you can discount past actions because the scenario has already played out and you were never in any danger, how were the cops to know whether it was okay to start putting "past actions aside", how can they assume he doesn't have another weapon or will get slashed AGAIN if they try and apprehend him, if they make incorrect assumption there is a very real possibility for more injuries or death.

I think some retard attacking cops with a deadly weapon deserves to get shot, you don't, we can keep on rhetorically masturbating in this thread for hours on end and we'll still never see eye to eye.

What did they think he was going to do? Wheel over and pick up the knife again to throw it again? I doubt he was carrying an entire fleet of throwing knives.

What part of "he wasn't confined to the wheelchair" don't you get? Witnesses said he was able to get up and walk around. As I said before, I think this was shitty policing at best, but at the same time I have no problem understanding why they shot the guy.

What Fatbat said... it seems he wasn't really confined to a wheelchair. Probably just used it for sympathy. I could go either way. If you didn't know he wasn't really confined to the wheelchair then I suppose I would feel bad popping the guy. But, fuck if I am going to get stabbed in the face trying to approach the dude, on the other hand.

I know a few cops (who aren't assholes). They are always told "shoot to kill". They don't fuck around. This guy lucked out from what I can tell.
