Don't think they give access to the source, but a good hosted solution is E-junkie Shopping Cart for selling downloads & tangible goods, I use it for my own e-book products.

It has pretty much every feature you could possibly want. To get it to run reasonably fast you'll need to do some tweaks.

It really depends on what your needs are. If its a handful of products and you want to keep it simple, something like Wordpress + a 3rd party cart (e.g. Ultracart) would do the trick. If you want a full blown e-commerce platform, Magento is certainly king in the open source space. Out of the box, it does a ton...but there is a fairly large extension market that extends the platform even further (both free and commercial). Some of the better stuff IMHO is being done by a company called Ahead Works. There are plenty of carts out there that will work with Google/PayPal, etc. where you host the code yourself that may be simpler than Magento but few can match its feature set.
short answer is that it depends
you could go for a hosted solution like volusion if your worried about traffic issues
you could go opensource if your on a budget
there are a lot of factors
just make sure whatever choice you make has a dedicated following/support/active forums

+1 for Magento, it's got a steepish learning curve but will do everything you want.

Having used just about every OpenSource cart, my pick would be magento. Just about the only downside to it is its speed and resource hog, but easily managed with a few tweaks and better hosting configs.
Prestashop is lighter, faster. However, the development community doesn't match that of Magento's yet. Developers are French, so things get lost in translation. The 'addons' are almost always paid and stuff that is standard in Magento and OsCommerce/Zencart is highly overpriced. You could get a good PRestashop, but you'll be paying money for it!
Os/Zencart are way oldschool. The coding and look of it shows, regardless of what theme you are using really. Zencart 2 is promising, but people are ditching Zencart and OsC in droves because its so dated.

i second this one, it's really quick to setup and easy to customize - plus mad easy for your clients (if you're dealing with them) to pick up and learn so no support calls..
Free carts suck unless you like playing with programming. Go with a paid cart.
