Tax Day Tea Parties - Lame or Effective?

People (mainly repubs) were pissed enough at the failed bank bailouts that they showed up en masse.

'Tea party' is just another name for 'post election bitchfest' IMHO.

i like the consumption tax idea - encourages savings, rewards cheap motherfuckers like myself - but there are lots of pitfalls with it too and they work w/ some funny numbers at times (specifically look at how the government is responsible for generating significant tax revenues themselves - doesn't balance). also, the idea is that there would be more of a black market for regular items - save 25% to buy out the back of a truck... hmm, enticing.

Lew Rockwell put it best on the Freedom Watch show yesterday. It's not the way the taxes are presented, the bottom line is HOW MUCH, and HOW MUCH SPENDING is going on. He hates the progressive tax, but he made the point that if the rates were 1, 2 and 3% that would be better than a sales tax.

This is a good read

Yeah I tried to see things from their point of view. I even watched the "coverage" by Fox News. I don't think it would be inaccurate at all to say that 90% of these rallies were nothing more than anti-Obama protests.

I watched the left media mock it and blatantly not even cover it and I watched Fox claim it was a grassroots movement that they were only covering then see all of their top star personalities MC'ing the events and dictating the flow of everything.

If they wanted to have their "crap we lost" bitchfest, that's fine. Just own up to it....They made 2 huge mistakes I'm particularly grateful for.

1) They decided to wait till after they lost to have their protests so it couldn't actually have any effect on the election.

2) They decided to do it only 3 months into Obama's term so it'll be long forgotten over 3 and a half years from now.

Good Job Bros.

The tea parties were gay but so is politics, there was one in my city with about 20-30 people which is pretty lame considering we have a population of 95,000 and are in Texas. It is funny seeing the two parties switch sides though, last year the democrats where the ones comparing Bush to Hitler and saying that the Iraq war was bankrupting us. Now they call anyone who criticizes Obama a racist and have absolutely no problem defending trillions in bailouts.

And during that time the republicans made it very clear that ANY type of criticism of America or the president was anti American and helping the terrorist. Now they shout "off with his head", compare Obama to Hitler, and seem to forget their own out of control spending over the last 8 years.

Somebody needs to tea bag both parties.

Ahh yes. And here is some "coverage" by CNN:

LOL I was unaware ANYONE but Fox News covered it. That's actually what prompted me to give them the benefit of the doubt and try watching them on Fox. I'm a liberal dem myself but I like to get both sides of the story and don't appreciate media blackouts at fucking all...

But then I watched the coverage and (I bullshit you not, no exaggeration) every other sentence spoken by the crowd interviewees, the moderators, and special guests attacked Obama and/or the current administration. With the majority of it having NOTHING to do with taxes..... They even (of course) took the opportunity to bring up Obama's citizenship, abortion, gays, guns, religion, and all the other issues that failed to keep republicans from getting booted out on their asses en-masse the past 2 election cycles -- but that they still felt they had some bitching left to do on.

My girlfriend and I supported the tea bagging and we tea bagged all day yesterday :)

i agree where was all the outrage with 8 years of GWB.

i didn't think of the black market, but you're right i would also imagine that if the consumption side was being taxed, the fed would go crazy on internet commerce considering they no longer had income nailed down.

All I know is the internet tax freedom act expires 2014.

That was a damn good read. I used to read quite a bit of Mises stuff, and some of the Austrian dudes.

oops, i see the Tea Parties thread.

I agree, these tea party groups had an opportunity to do the right thing and really target tax reform, which is something we can all agree on.

Instead they squandered their moment in the spotlight with partisan bitching.

Sad.

Too many people with too many agendas all struggling to get their message out on a given day, instead of getting out the message they all have in common.

It's typical.

The IRS code is 62,000 pages. When you signed your returns that everything you reported was legal, were you aware of all 62,000 pages worth of rules?

I'm curious because the US government isn't even sure if there are 1.8 million words or 3.6 million words in the code. So even if you were right in your filing, the government might not know the whole code, and think you are wrong.

If anyone wants to listen to a great (and humorous) history of tax resistance, about 45 mins...

Our tax code is out of control, fortunately Obama has a goal of having some more simplified tax code outlined by the end of the year.

You don't have to agree with everything he does but I think everyone has to admit he has been extremely active these first few months.

"tea parties" won't be effective until someone gets hurt. people need to ditch their lattes and put on their war paint.

That's just tinkering. He's increasing government debt (which is public debt) and then gunna make the rape code easier to understand.

Big deal he is active. Bush invaded two countries, brought in NCLB, Prescription Drugs, cut taxes, promoted a stock market and housing boom, and doubled the national debt.

Don't confuse activity with quality, or tinkering with lower spending and taxes.

It's the spending that matters. There are no free meals.
