Ron Paul sent out an email to his supporters a few hours ago. The short version: Ron Paul is going to start scaling back his campaign for President and let the rest ride out.

Also warns that because Romney is out of the race, there is little chance for a brokered convention.

He said that he really needs to focus on retaining his congressional seat in his home district, and that's going to take time and money.

The real reason for the message however was to confirm that he will not run as a 3rd party candidate much to the dismay of people who hoped he would.

I commend him for sticking to his principles. If he did run as an IP or LP candidate, here's what would happen. He would get his typical 10-15% of the vote, and syphon off just enough Republican votes to throw the election to the Democrats, and the GOP would never forgive him. So I think it was the right decision.

It's obvious that we're going to start hearing less and less of Ron Paul in the coming weeks and months. I have a couple of hopes:

1. He is referred to and cited respectfully be candidates on both sides of the isle. They can learn a lot by listening to Ron's policies and could gain a lot of respect from it.

2. The GOP lets Ron speak at the convention, and is respectful about it.

I look at Ron Paul and his Presidential run as a very important seed-planter. I believe that during his campaign in travelling around the country, he planted the seeds, hundreds or thousands will get involved with politics and bring his ideals to every nook and crany of our political system, from local government to state to federal.

A somber but bitter sweet night tonight for Ron Paul supporters.

Here's a link to the letter.

This was bound to happen sooner or later, so I'm not really surprised. Ron himself admitted a few months ago that it's unlikely he's going to win, but spreading the message was worth the effort.

There's obviously a large number of supporters and activists who were not previously active in politics. In a perfect world, these people would not simply go back to their daily lives, but instead focus on fighting the media and corporatism that prevented someone like Ron Paul from being elected.

Straight from the get-go, Ron Paul was never given equal airtime on any of the networks. Had this not been the case, it's quite possible Ron would have a better chance of winning.

My hopeless optimism is that the men and women who were going to vote for Ron Paul now do everything in their power to deconstruct the media/political barrier.
In other words, I hope that people start asking themselves why didn't the media give Ron Paul an equal opportunity? Why do the networks publically declare who is "potically electable", and who isn't?

Don't get me wrong, I'm a firm believer in free markets, but these companies are responsible for delivering news to 90% of the people in this country. And it's fairly obvious they are abusing this privilege by telling us what our political options are, instead of giving every candidate an equal chance.

i just read it, didn't surprise me but was kind of depressing.

I gotta say though, he ran this entire extremely rough campaign and never once strayed from his principles or play the game like a good politician. Kudos to him. I hope his legacy lives on and he goes down in history. Unfortunately most heroes never get recognized by the books.

I am a long-time libertarian. He did way better than expected. Dude's natural base is <1%

The fact he even got double digits in some caucauses after polling around 11th out of 11 candidates at one point and getting very little positive or fair media is an accomplishment.

Let's hope he defeats that asshole Chris Penden now.

If you have any interest in Liberty/freedom movement, realize it is a long term struggle.

Personally I am more in the non-political sector of the movement. Make a shitload of $$$$, take care of your family, enjoy your life, and support important causes.

I think his supporters are mostly buffoons, but good for him for hanging in this long and for knowing when to fold a losing hand. He's a gentleman to be sure.

...That would probably be a majority of people on this forum. What's your beef with Ron Paul supporters, other than the fact that they aren't asking for government hand outs?

Defending the constitution, supporting civil liberties, expanding personal freedoms, eliminating the deficit, downsizing the bureaucratic fustercluck of a government we have... Sounds like the best damn agenda I've ever seen.

That is depressing.

The media fucking killed him, plain and simple. They snubbed him at debates, they sideswiped him with dumb shit when he was interviewed. And when he polled higher than Guilliani and Thompson, or won second, first place finishes in a few states, he barely got a mention. The average American, especially one without a computer, has probably never heard of Ron Paul, and that's why he never polled higher.

It's pretty common sense to love what Ron Paul stands for unless you're a welfare junkie or war-monger.

Is there a great conspiracy against him.... probably not.... but its not hard to take a look at who really owns us and why a person like Ron Paul will never get elected. (YouTube - Who owns you Americans?)

That said, I pray to god a Democrat wins (please not Hillary), or Mccain dies of a heart attack. But, at this point it doesn't matter who we elect... we're either going to be paying the welfare tax or 100 years war tax.

Your being optimistic. We can/will/probably be at war with iran, china, russia, and half the damn world in 5 to 10 years if we "Stay the Course"

Think China would turn aggressive when we refuse to pay them interest or default on their loans to us? I can see it now.... sorry guys, we have to pay for all these wars (mccain), or sorry, I have to give every kid in the U.S. free foot massages (billary) so we can't you pay you back anymore.... ohh wait. Here I just printed your 9999 trillion dollars. Go buy a soda pop with it.

It's cool though - I've always wanted my dollars to be right on par with the Peso. That way when we start immigrating to mexico illegally it will be easier to convert our money :)

I hear that you can find good work there and there is plenty of land since they all moved to the U.S. and got amnesty.

--- jokes (sort of) aside ---
Obama isn't any better than hillary. I think he may actually be worse.... his record is pretty liberal and his stances are all just fluff. Liberal is cool as long as you aren't using it to take away my liberty or provide a full blown nanny state. ie spend within your means. Don't destroy my kids future, etc... Mccain, obama, and hillary are all campaigning and promising things that aren't in their power. Hell the first thing Mccain is going to do is make the bush tax cuts permanent (who needs that pesky congress to vote anyway - mccain promised).

Most of us here are independent spirits in the first place or we would go to work from 9 to 5 like the sheep. Of course we are Ron Paul supporters because he makes sense.... If he spent more time saying he was going to give our kids feet massages the media would have listened more :)

Ill pay the 100 year war tax please!

Yup... they killed Edwards too (like i care) but Paul got it the worst.

If Paul HAD run as an independent I think he would have taken as many votes from Democrats as Republicans... Democrats cling to his Anti-War message which goes beyond Obama or Clinton goals of exiting Iraq swiftly to exiting foreign countries immediately.

Although he has very Republican ideas as a whole, a lot of people will vote this election based mainly on the War in Iraq - where technically he sides with the Democrats.

Good run at it Dr. Paul..

He is the only Republican to date that one of my EXTREMELY liberal brothers actually voted for him in the primary. Unreal.

He was also the ONLY Republican to ever get an audience going fucking wild on Bill Maher's show.

Jimmy Cramer also endorsed the shit out of him.

Jay Leno endorsed the shit out of him.

I know it doesn't matter what comedians or talk show hosts say.. but considering how much fucking pull they have on potential voters in a REAL election.. come on! I know he wasn't doing all that well during primaries.. but if he would run as an Independent he would have had a real fucking chance at the win.

Although.. McCain is starting to adopt a few of Ron Paul's positions and topics, so it may not be a total loss. Let's also not forget that in the Spring, Ron Paul was a little nobody, and with the work of a few people from THIS forum, volunteering their time, cash, and knowledge, we managed to have a bit of an effect on the actual campaign for Ron Paul (unofficially of course -- according to the RP campaign management team themselves!).

I'm proud of the effort, and proud to say that no matter what he didn't give up when he was kicked so many damn times by the mainstream media.. so fuck them, MAYBE Ron Paul will get the nod to be a VP, but I kinda doubt that too,

And on a side note... I'm waiting for McCain to drop dead of a heart attack or self-destruct because of his horrible policies. Whichever comes first.
