I don't know that there is "relatively little chance". There are a lot of awful human beings out there.

I agree that there's a counterpoint for everything I said, but statistically speaking, it doesn't make sense to put them on the table.

If you take a thousand humans there's going to be maybe 0.5% that are child molestors, 2% chance that he brings misery to more people, 2% chance of cancer, 5% chance he's a total piece of shit. So overall there's a 90%~ chance that the human is greater than the dog.

The dog has 0.0001% chance of being at all useful to anyone but you.

It would be absolutely selfish to choose the dog.

I think there are a lot more people like you (maybe not as awesome as you) then there are complete losers and sociopaths. We just don't get close enough to people on a daily basis to really know them, and the assholes do everything they can to be noticed.

If I met a complete stranger that needed 10 grand for life prolonging medical treatment, I don't think I would give it to them (unless I had tons of disposable income).

As to your new bizarrely concocted guinea pig argument and how it shows my logic as flawed, you make no sense. Something that lives in a cage and doesn't really want you to pet it, is not really the same. The closest would be a cat, but even they have a level of detachment. I'm guessing you've never owned a dog, or if you do or have, you weren't particularly attached.

I've had many other animals and have never loved them like I have loved any of my dogs. When they died, I was not massively moved, or at least didn't grieve like I have with all my dogs. When I've lost dogs it's no different than losing a family member and can take weeks and sometimes longer to get over the pain.

Would I grieve for weeks over a parrot? Guinea Pig? No. And likewise for a stranger I know nothing of, have no attachment to, love of or memories with.

And going back to your clever spin, if someone manages to love an animal, that shows no emotion or no real level of attachment to it's owner, as much as a dog, then I would expect them to likewise save the pet over the human.

When you properly bond with an animal they love you unconditionally. They deserve the same back and that puts them at a higher priority than someone you've never met and have no bond with. As others have said, pets are a part of your family. If they're not then you havn't bonded with them. You probably havn't bothered to learn about the creature and its behaviours and interactions. Sadly thats the case with many pet owners. Bad behaviours in pets are mostly down to its owners.
If they're your pet they rely on you. They are dependant as much as a young child. They make an effort to protect you from other animals and dangers whether you realise it or not, its in their nature to protect their family. Why should you not protect them back because some fuckwit put himself in that position? I bet you the animal had a more reasonable excuse for being in that situation than the human did.

In all reality my dog. She's part of my family, and family> douche bag strangers . I would do my best too save both and try to drag them both in but I can't really see myself saving a stranger. There's no attachment to a stranger. You guys can throw the what if's about a person all you want.

but, i think, it comes down like this:

1. over 50% of the dog owners would go for their dog instead of the stranger.
2. over 95% (don't you think at least 5% of retarded psychos are there in this world?) of people who don't have dogs as pets would go for the stranger.

and to those people who are saying dog is like their family member and an animal (dog in this case) is no less than a human ... i got a question for you;

who would you save your human family member (son/ daughter/ wife etc) or animal family member (dog etc)?? and the reason for your choice. i am curious to know your answer in this case.

one more question is;

you and your dog are drowning and one of your family member is in dilemma as to who to save

then who would you ask him to save yourself or the dog?

Personally if it were me needing to be rescued I think I'd probably deserve it enough for getting myself into a situation that I could drown in anyway. I'm very paranoid and take great care not to get into ridiculous situations.
But given a brief background in small animal care and rescue and all the things I've had to deal with I think I'd overall be relieved that someone out there cared enough about their dog to do something like that. Its possible I wouldn't realised it whilst inhaling large amounts of water, but the sentiment would be there somewhere.
