Perhaps this professor of (lol) sociology should sit a chemistry class as alcohols (ethanol, methanol, propanol etc) are not odourless.
Hell, there's even a standard term in chemical description of 'alcoholic odour'.

Beer, wine, and liquor all contain some amount of ethyl alcohol, or ethanol - distinct from other kinds of alcohol, such as rubbing alcohol, which is poisonous if taken internally. In its purest form, ethanol is colorless and odorless.
Also, DUI lawyers in the US know this is the case, probably because that info to win cases.
