I got a folder filled with TV ads, gonna share the best ones in this thread and maybe a few of you mofos can learn how to elicit strong emotions and sell your stuff better... or if you're like me, just enjoy the creativity and possibly find inspiration for your own ads.

Feel free to contribute.

Obvious but Apple's 1984. Clear differentiation strategy that stills forms a large part of the companies marketing today.

I'm so in on this thread.

I just finished reading Rosser Reeves' 1961 classic "Reality In Advertising", and he had a lot of things to say about the importance of aligning your audio/video with your USP so as not to distract from the message.

The book is out of print, and I paid around $100 for my copy, but I might be persuaded to summarize it here if there's any interest in this topic.

Here's some of Reeve's work on Anacin.

If this thread turns into a parade of award winning spots, I will be disappointed.

Too much TV advertising is produced by art-school types who spend their time trying to demonstrate their brilliance to other art-school types and care not a bit if the campaign they are proposing performs.

Which is not to say that art can't be functional, but I'm pretty sure the purpose of an advertisement is to sell something.

This one seems stupid, but actually became a cultural phenomenon and managed to get the problem the product proposed to solve into the minds of incredible numbers of people.

In fact, LifeAlert is still using the phrase on their website, and went so far as to trademark it in 1990.

Having spent a good part of my life dabbling in the print media and having worked closely with a ton of advertising firms there is one thing I've noticed. Advertising, may or may not be product relevant (that part would depend on whether you're selling or branding), but it almost always have the feel-good factor - The prowess to elicit positive emotions in the viewers.

The Millar Brown Agency has a nice download on the said topic - http://www.millwardbrown.com/Librar...wn_KnowledgePoint_EmotionalResponse.sflb.ashx

And with this aspect, the Coca Cola Company almost always has been a winner in my eye when it comes to advertising commercials. And they manage to recreate this success outside of the US market as well.

Their commercials don't sell a drink - they make their viewers happy.

Other than the above, the P & G company had this 4 minute (that's correct) commercial created for their Pantene Shampoo brand featuring a deaf/mute violin player. Again, has nothing to do with the brand except for the subtle hints (the girl has great hair) and ends with a pantene logo.

Dude, now you got me super interested.. PLEASE do a write-up/summary on this. Or at least a cliff-notes / highlights of the book. I'm about to put together a promo video myself and it sounds like this could come very handy.

Also - I like your avatar. Agent Dale Cooper, FBI. :)
That used to be my screen name back in the Usenet days of '92-'95 :)
Twin Peaks FTW.

Well, I feel like after all I got out of THIS EPIC THREAD, the least I can do is write a book report. I'm on it.

You all lose. This is fucking immense. Advertising by stealth. Michael Mann, Benicio Del Toro. Win.

I wish I could find it, but it was two guys walk up to each other in an airfield, shake hands, jump into a little plane and take off. Then two guys walk into frame with instructor written on the back of their jackets and it was a life insurance commercial.

I love the British Lynx ads. Here are two, one all featuring the delectible Jessica Jane Clement and the the other with assorted hotties. They are funn and sexy.

A really striking piece, but afaik, it only ran twice.

Interesting. It's one of those ones people like showing in marketing but probably a lot of the acclaim has come retrospectively. I wasn't even born in fairness.

Two more examples:

AA advert. Breakdown recovery service. One of the most emotionally draining experiences for the customer. The advert appeals to this with a perfectly fitting use of Carole King's "You've got a friend". Not to mention the A becoming you've got "AA" friend. Simple but so effective.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9tRyWEgTbg]The AA - Advert "You've Got A Friend" - YouTube[/ame]

Google Chrome ad. Sure there has been a lot of variations of this but achieving emotional attachment to technology services can be very difficult. The positive reinforcement of Google and your life is great propaganda.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4vkVHijdQk]Google Chrome: Dear Sophie - YouTube[/ame]

One more...

John Lewis. Home department store. Sure you can say they sell household products and furniture but what they really sell are middle class lifestyles which is perfectly encapsulated in the advert. As is a commitment to quality and the implied declaration of CRM.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHcm1ec7CcY]John Lewis advert Billy Joel's She's Always a Woman Fyfe Dangerfield cover - YouTube[/ame]

Oldie, but a memorable ad for Wendy's. The ad's "formula" can be replicated in other ways for sure...

EDIT: vid won't embed...Mods?
