They're looking at publicly available data (GDP, life expectancy, literacy, etc.)
Do you really doubt that people in Norway are a bit more likely to live longer or graduate from high school than someone in the USA and a lot more likely than someone in Niger?

Well of course, the population in Norway is less than that of Colorado alone. Let's not even get into 3rd world countries.

I've been considering moving down under though. Australia seems like it would be a fairly easy transition from living state side.

That's about as intelligent as saying any of the scientific breakthroughs the Nazi's came up with are useless because they were developed by Nazi's.
The U.N. does plenty of good shit as well as the stupid fuck ups, and it would probably do a lot better if certain countries that are the only ones to have ever used nuclear weapons on other countries decided to actually play by the rules and not act unilaterally (not blaming you folk, just your blunderingly delusional previous head of state), it might be a bit less antagonistic to said dictators.

Australia: Not so good if your Indian

Iceland: is fucking cool, i'd love to live there for a bit

I woulda called out Iceland seen as their whole banking system crashed not too long ago sending their country to turmoil.

Any one of the top 20 or 30 places on the list is a fricken AWESOME place to be born, brought up or to call home.

Yep. This list is not designed to show which country is the best to live in. It is designed to show which countries need development aid the most, or in other words, which countries are the worst to live in.
The parameters the ranking is based on break down and become more and more meaningless the higher up the list you look. Most countries in the Western world are indeed awesome as compared to the other ones.
