Up To 45K To Spend On Car: What to Get?

Unless your paying cash (and not spending more than 1% of your available cash) forget about this little pipe dream of yours and get something sensible (which can still be cool)

Exactly..... I spent 26k on a VW Jetta TDI and love it. 50 MPG is a nice bonus as well. And I paid cash for it. I hate paying interest on anything.

Bank your cash so when you get to be my age you can have the security of not having to eat dog food to survive. :)

Wait 12 months, add 15k = 2013 Audi S5 V6T (the t actually means supercharged 375hp v6, don't ask me why).

He said no audi. And what more - you even say he should wait for it. And what more - you even say he should add 15K for what he said NO to :D

Could always get a classic muscle car as well.

Classic cars are cheap now. You can get a solid 1st gen Camaro or Chevelle. Maybe a late 60's Mustang Fastback. The Mopar route is cool too.

For $45k you can get probably a pretty sick resto mod that would drive like a new car, look like a sick muscle car and be cheap as shit to fix cause it will all have new easily found (and cheap) parts.

A Camaro or Chevelle with a new LS engine or a Challenger or Charger with a new Hemi would be my choice..

I get just as many looks in my 68 Camaro as my friend does in his f430. Looks from hot rocker chicks with tattoos if you're into that.

Great ideas!

Projecting much?

All you know about is me I set a budget for myself, do yourself a favor and keep the argument to yourself. Thanks.

Not sure why you think this is an argument? Its just some friendly advise to consider. For some reason this is a touchy subject for you so all I can say is good luck to you

Another awesome idea... I might just start seeing what I can find. Always admired the old school Mustangs and Chevelles, I should see if any auctions are coming up.

+1 for the XKR dude .. those things are sweet. and there's not a whole lot of them on the road. when i saw that in person i was like whaaaa is that .. and i know every car on the road.

XKR isn't exactly an exotic, but theyre rare enough that i would go for it myself.

fuck the old ass porsche 993 and fuck an audi...

you want something to drive around in that people will not know what it is, or something they rarely see. and the jag will do that for ya

dmnEPC has a point.

If your budget is $45k, and you plan to buy a car that is over 10 years old, then only use say 55% of that budget on the car, and leave the rest for 'unexpected eventualities'. I'm 99.99% sure they will come up.

Those exotic cars have EXTREMELY exotic prices when you need parts/mechanic work. Spend $45k on one of those old Ferraris you are talking about, and you might end up with another $20k in repairs above your budget.

On a 355 a 30,000 mile tune up costs $5k, a set of tires will run you over $1k, an exhaust manifold replacement costs $3,000, plus $1,000 labor. Most engine work requires an engine-out service, which starts at $5,000.

I strongly suggest you do your research. The cost of buying an OLD luxury vehicle is just a part, and not that big, of the real final price tag.

Put the $45K in the bank (or invest) and join a classic/prestige car club. Something like

http://www.clubgt.co.uk/membership.html

That way you only pay for a car when you're using it, and the repairs are someone else's problem. Plus you get to drive a different car every time.

If you really fall in love with a particular model you can always buy it later on.

Much more cost effective way to drive fancy cars imo. Ownership of a depreciating, high ongoing-cost asset you'll only make occasional use of makes no sense at all.

I was the same. Was at a buddy's house and his brother came over in one. Was in complete aww of the new model. They look even more sick in person.

Holy shit whats with all the lessons in life?

The dude said he has $45k to spend on a car and asked for suggestions.

He didn't ask for financial advice, you know - some people like to spend their money on things they like and not worry 'too' much about the future.

I bought a car that was a bit too expensive for me at the time but i fucking love it and the experience of driving it and the fun it provides me and my family with is worth every single penny.

If i spent my life continually worrying about the future and being safe with every single penny i spent, i think i'd rather just shoot myself in the face right now.

You can't spend money when you're dead, so why spend your life saving it all :)

Ps. +1 for the Jag... very nice car and not one you see on the roads every day.

Don't post this on a public forum if you're going to get your panties in a bundle when somebody explains the reality of what a potentially bad decision this could be for yourself.

If someone asks for suggestions he's going to get suggestions.

Economy is a big part of buying a car.

He asked for suggestions on a selection of cars in that price range. If he needed personal economic advice he'd ask an accountant, not a bunch of random people in a forum.

I'm sure most people here don't know anything about OP's bank balance and financial situation, certainly not enough to give advice which basically tells him not to bother.

Fuck it dude, just buy a pushbike. Think of how much you'll save from the lower depreciation and no fuel costs.
