U.S. launches first missiles against Gadhafi forces - CNN.com

Tripoli, Libya (CNN) -- French, British and American military forces made good Saturday on international warnings to Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi, using fighter jets and cruise missiles to hammer military positions.

U.S. Tomahawk missiles have landed in the western area around Tripoli and Misrata, a senior Defense Department official said Saturday.

Earlier, French fighter jets deployed over Libya fired at a military vehicle Saturday, the country's first strike against Gadhafi's military forces, who earlier attacked the rebel stronghold of Benghazi.

Prime Minister David Cameron said late Saturday that British forces also are in action over Libya. "What we are doing is necessary, it is legal and it is right," he said. "I believe we should not stand aside while this dictator murders his own people."

Discuss.

When did the French get some balls? Seems like they've been kind of proactive in all this.

Lol, they sat idly by as dictators murdered their own people for years. The question is: why now?

Yeah, there have been riots and he vowed to step down, but is that really that different from the past decades he's been reigning? No.

There are other motivating factors that the news isn't covering here.

In my opinion Muammar Gaddafi doesn't use his head while thinking.

He belies that he has more power than the rest or the world together. He has no common sense and he takes Libyans straight to death

I'm living in Malta and I feel sorry for the refugees who are force to flee from their country just because one moron doesn't get the hint.. come on U.S give him hell!

Cause he's the 1st black president, duh.

It was probably more because they knew he would be pressured into backing down from a lot of his stances, including his (relatively) pro-Palestinian stance and his intention to withdraw from Iraq, once in office. The Nobel Peace Prize was kind of a way of thanking him in advance for stuff he hasn't done yet, to put pressure on him to do what he promised.

112 Tomahawks is a hell of an opening salvo, considering the Navy has about 3500 total.

Reminds of that Gladiator scene: "ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?"

The american sheeple need to be rallied around a new cause - looks like support for iraq/'stan is dying out :D

How to know when you are in the wrong and nobody agrees with you:

"As of Friday, France, Britain, the United States and Arab League nations passed along a warning for Gadhafi to stop his operations immediately."

BTW, anyone remember the old parody from the 1980s: "50 Ways to Bomb Gadhafi?" (Sung to the tune of 50 ways to leave your lover.) -I can't find it on YouTube but it would be extremely relevant today...

I'm really surprised Gaddafi didn't take the gold bullion + babes in venezuela + cigars with Chávez option... pride just gets in the way sometimes haha

France has more oil operations going on in Libya than the US, due to France's historical influence over Africa and because the US used to have an embargo against Libya.

Actually, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to him because the president of the Norwegian Nobel Committee (a former prime minister known for his low intelligence and extremely bad judgment) wanted his picture taken with Obama. It's well known in Norwegian media circles.

Here's one of 'em:

I know the pic is annoying, but it gets the point across.
