Has anyone run the OS upgrade?

Did it work out? Did it mess everything up?

Any compatibility issues?

TIA

Also, save the effort if you want to tell me to clean install. That's not the question I am asking.

Uhh..Vista sucks.

Just install it, you can upgrade from vista and keep the same programs I blelieve..It should. If for some reason you can't upgrade and keep everything, it will keep all of you files and programs in a folder called "windows.old" within your hard drive, so you will still have everything you have now, except you can't run the programs without reinstalling them but you will have access to every single file you had on vista.

Oh, and there's less compatibility issues with Windows 7, you can make certain programs that may have been just designed to run in Windows XP run on W7, just an example, you can run almost any windows program by right clicking>properties>compatibility.

So anything you need to run that has been ran on an older OS will still work on W7.

I just upgraded from XP to Windows 7. Vista was definitely trash, but im real happy with my new O.S

You shouldn't upgrade it anyway, do a clean install and it will keep all of your files. Upgrading just causes problems because the programs were installed for Vista, not W7. Keep your files and reinstall your programs. Simple as that.

yeah I went from vista home to windows 7 home, had the kernel problem where my comp would just randomly hang the fuck up in the middle of something and not respond at all, fixed that easily... now it runs faster and just more balling overall

Been using Win7 since 2 years. Its the best damn stable version ever. Havent faced any compatibility issues till date. You shouldnt even be asking.

i initially did an upgrade from vista to w7 - worked just fine for a bit but then started to slow down... i ended up doing a fresh install and it is money now... much faster

I've yet to see a compatibility issue, and I've been using Windows 7 Ultimate for about a year or so. I don't even remember any compatibility issues when using the Beta.

I saw this which you may, or may not, effect you:
It probably won't affect most users, but the Vista-to-Windows-7 upgrade paths are actually limited by version in the following ways:

* Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium
* Windows Vista Business to Windows 7 Professional
* Windows Vista Ultimate to Windows 7 Ultimate

It's also not possible to go through the upgrade package to upgrade from x86 to x64, if that is relevant to you at all.

-too many variables (software/hardware) to be certain so prepare for the worst
-Clone your Vista install to a separate drive/partition first (assuming you have important shit on it)
-use the upgrade adviser from MS to find obvious problems.

Vista and Win7 share a lot of the same code and the upgrade will work fine most of he time. I find systems with proprietary software cause the most problems (laptops esp)

Great help, much appreciated.

w7 is good shit.. I never used vista - went from Xp to 7 and was real happy with the new OS.

edit - not sure what update your talking about.. you can update vista to 7? *head scratch*..

Just in case you still have any doubt, my Vista Home Premium got very slow and was crashing twice a day, so I did a Win7 upgrade two weeks ago using the full retail version. I took a disk image of Vista just in case I needed to revert.

The only problems I encountered were:
· had to upgrade a couple of drivers before install (DON'T ignore compatibility warnings)
· had to reinstall my firewall and disk imaging software afterwards
· drive letters (external, usb stick, dvd drive) changed, so had to change them back
· Start Menu was cleared, so had to re-pin shortcuts
· 'pin to toolbar' feature sucks, so had to read how to get the quickstart menu back
· had to set-up the 'taskbar overflow' pop-up properly (and got used to it after a day's usage)
· hated the login background, so I read how to change/hack that
· default win7 'libraries' (new feature) were annoying, so I had to edit them
· skype icon works weirdly (by design), so I run it in vista compatibility mode
· a batch of 50 subsequent Win7 updates failed, so had to do them a few at a time, not all at once

It took three hours for the upgrade and then another three fixing all that stuff. Everything else is great. Very happy with Win7 so far; much better than Vista. I use laptops at work that have an full OEM install of Win7 and I can't say that they are any faster or more stable than my upgrade path.

Just thought I would bold that last part since half the responses ignore it completely.

You think it runs like shit now? Let's fuck around with virtually every single system file and get a new taskbar. Vista and 7 aren't that different. Vista was great after SP2 with a few tweaks applied. Just keep it. Upgrades are just a fucking mess and headache, especially when you've got tons of shit on there to begin with.

Don't know if you're going 32 or 64 bit, but check compatibility of you most important apps. I would at least do a bios upgrade on my motherboard before proceeding. Have a running laptop to Google way through any issues and maybe have a flash drive ready. Grab a six-pack of your preferred beverage and go for it.

I know it's not the answer you're looking for G (why?), but trust me, a clean install is the route you want to go IMO.

Take the time to back everything up, your files, bookmarks, configuration files, messenger logs, etc. etc. etc. It takes a few hours to prep for but it saves you a lot of time and headache. Look at every app you run and think if there's something you need to save from it. Back it all up and wipe the shit clean and start fresh. It's the only way to know for sure.

You'll be down for a day, but it's worth it I think.

Win7 has been fantastic otherwise. Love it. Mind you, I skipped Vista and came from XP so I missed that whole MS gong show.

If you have any other questions you know where to find me.
