What are your top 5 mac apps

Jing is a fun, free utility for advanced screen capture. Mac OS comes with Grab which is good, but Jing is better.

You'll like the free dashboard widgets you can download from the Apple site. I know Windows uses Yahoo widgets, but these are built into the Apple OS and don't clutter up your desktop.

As a UNIX operating system, Mac OS is a lot more solid and stable than Windows, and is far more user intuitive. Just ridding yourself of annoyingly friendly "wizards" is worth the price of a Mac.

QuickSilver
1Password
Concentrate
Mozilla Thunderbird (+ Lightning Addon, which is superb calender/diary/planner)
CleanMyMac
Stuffit Expander

If you like tweaking, little apps, like Deeper, OnyX, TinkerTool and another tool i forget the name of that removes all language files that aren't needed. When i ran it i saved several GB.

Coda (if you're stuck over coda vs textmate just download the trial version of both and make up your own mind)
KeePass (1Password is way better, but I use keepass since I use several computers, some non-macs and I like to share the database across them all using DropBox)
DropBox (best app ever?)
Adium (Instant Messaging)
FileZilla (FTP)

Edit: Forgot OpenOffice

wish I could help you out more.. I got a MBP 17 that I got last year that I still need to upgrade the OS on ( shows you how much I use it ), but when I do use it, nothing beats:

adium - instant mess
colloquy - irc
transmit -ftp
transmission -p2p
cyberduck - sftp
parallels - vm software to run copies of winOS
little snitch ( must have )

Make sure you get/got a copy of Office too, so many times this was needed for shit on the fly I was doing.

fuckin aewsome suggestions! I'm taking note of all them... my doorbell is supposed to ring any minute now ... FUCKIN MAILMAN LETS DO THIS SHIT

to whoever mentioned about bootcamp, I basically use the mac extensively for graphic design, web programming and general online mayhem.. but I also want to play games like modern warfare 2 and my PC laptop is a fucking POS. Before evereyone starts trippin about me buying a mac and wanting to play games at the same time well.. yeah I want my cake and eat it too

does Vuze act up on your machine? For me, it was working great for awhile, but eventually had to uninstall it. Kept crashing constantly. Vuze rocks though, I should try it out again.

older version did, newer stuff seems solid.

Since you bought the 17, try TwoUp and/or SizeUp. They make organizing windows super easy. TwoUp is free, basically let's you for a window to occupy one half of the screen, where as SizeUp does the same, but includes support for multiple monitors (you can use short cuts to move windows to other screens). SizeUp is also $13, but it's well worth it and they've got a trial.

Leaving almost any computer on that long without a restart or anything is usually a bad idea, and it is stressful on the hardware. Especially on a laptop or all-in-one. Servers stay on all of the time, but they have redundant backups just in case a drive goes, or something else goes(and they do all the time).

generally shutting down at night is a good thing for any computer, even if the OS was designed to be left on all the time. plus it saves on your power bill.

Its a laptop, just shut the lid and let it sleep, no need to power it down.

i dont understand buying a 17in laptop. its supposed to be portable. 15in is perfect and i'd take 13in over 17in . When you are at your desk you hook it up to a 24 or 30" screen.

i just have to have a big screen when I work, and I do a lot of work on the road. I also have a large backpack so it fits perfectly, not a problem.
