He doesn't have the personality to run a company that size and as an techie there's a danger of him getting overly attached to his pet projects

CEO's vary immensely. They have a number of common traits, but you have everything from the most secretive introverted "you never hear of him" CEO's to the guys that go to all the events and think they're "the one".
The thing that amuses me with commentaries like this is that everyone automatically assumes they are better at making decisions about who should lead Google than the Google board.
The board that to date has built one of the most successful companies in the world.
The board that provided the ecosystem most of this forum still use to make money online.
