^This man speaks the truth. Gangs controlling rural areas in 1st-world countries is very real, and this in peacetime. You're going to need a military-grade bunker to even have a chance of surviving an attack by them.
If Somali pirates can reach tankers 1000's of km's out in the ocean, a gang could also easily reach any island that you can reach too. And they will rape your bitches.

Funny! Last year i setup mid size pool 15X15 ft with this aquaponics sytems.. U can grow lot of vegetables .
Are we all paranoid, or are we all feeling shit is gona hit the fan soon? I knew I wasn't nuts after all.
I'm also planning to move to a small farm and then in no particular order:
- get some solar panels installed
- buid a small artificial lake with eatable fish, gota learn how that aquaponics shit works
- plant around 200 fruit trees
- build a fucking bunker with at least the capability for a family of 10. I'm damn serious about this one!
- continuously store food for 6 moths (there's a ton of stuff you can store)
- cultivate some vegetables (potatoes, onions, letuce, carrots...)
- get a hunters license (in my country you need one of those to have legal guns)
- buy a shitload o ammo
- fill my barn with even more tools (you can "almost" build the fucking Eiffel Tower with a wrench)
- trade my homo cars for some nasty pick up trucks
- buy some more land from neighbours
Finally GTFO of the city.
You know, even if a big fucking war isn't coming in the next 10 years, food shortages are gona be a big ass problem and whoever can cultivate a few things will be less afected.

It may not be a permanent solution, since you can't really stay hidden while farming or generating electricity, but it does sound like you could live in one unknown for a year or more... Poorly. -But perhaps long enough for some semblance of civilization to rise again.

Considering that the nearest even remotely major population center is more than 40 minutes by car from here, not worried.. That's a long way to fight to try to take some food.. And since we are in gun loving Tennessee, it's far more likely the hillbillies will simply surround the cities and keep the riffraff locked up tight by shooting anyone that tries to get out.. What do you want to know?? We've been planning to move to the country for about 5 years now and finally found the 'perfect' spot last fall.. Wrote a check that day for the land.. The first barn (80x40 with my office etc) will be done Tuesday or Wednesday of this week..
That's my F350 sticking out of the door..
Horse pastures/fences get started next month.. New house this fall, maybe spring.. Plus several more barns, lake, a few ponds, etc.. Fuel tank is above ground around back of the barn where you can't see it unless you come some half mile on to the property..
Next fall we start on the power generation.. Going with both wind (not much) and water once the lake is done..
The main reasons we chose Tn were, warm weather most of the year, great people, and no personal income tax.. Great place to come and make serious bank online and keep the tax man out of your pocket..
I'f I were you, I'd be much more afraid of a tornado.
Meh, bunker/safe room is being built in to the house for when they roll through.. Can't be skeert of everything, just plan well enough to stand a better than fair chance of survival..

Got the guns and ammo part, combine me and my pops and we have ~30 guns and 3k+ rounds of ammo. He actually has the same idea as Feydakin and purchased land in TN, so if shit actually did go that south ill be rolling up there.
There has been ALOT Of research done by many individuals and even the US government on what many of you consider to be a 'zombie apocalypse". Except they term it a EMP attack or major solar flare. The estimate right now is around 150 to 200 million dead in the US alone if we're hit, this includes the fact that europe & asia are unaffected, more if they are effected by a disaster.
See, our society is built on fuel & energy , if either are disrupted in a major way we all are in major trouble. For instance, for all of you that think you can escape - think again. Look at Florida , New Orleans, or any southern state that has hurricanes. When Miami is hit by a hurricane, those trying to leave are on the freeways for up to a day trying to head north, it may take up to 4 hours to travel only 25 miles or so, this is for a city of 400,000 or so, and a metro area of around 5m, NYC is around 35m and LA is in the area of 10m or so.
So , you have pretty much one option - tough it out.
The average household in the US has literally 2 days worth of food in the cupboard, many people I know of course have more, but as a real estate agent I can attest to the fact most households live and depend on fast food. This means you absolutely will be rushing with every single individual in your area to buy food & water. If you think prices are bad at the store now, imagine $35 for one bottle of water or $20 for a can of soup beans, believe it or not it's a reality when a major disaster hits. In New Orleans during Katrina when nothing was working, a bag of ice was going for $100, and people were being shot by others to take their bag.
Finally, managing to find a firearm in a situation like this will only improve your chances of survival by a very narrow margin. Unless you're trained and know what to do with a gun, you're just going to be a easy target with or without a gun. A gun and training would be the only way to really protect yourself.
As for hunting, current estimates put ALL wildlife at around 2 weeks after said disaster. During the depression the majority of deer were wiped out in the US due to hungry people. For instance in my state of Ohio we have nearly half a million deer, however if you figure it up, they would be enough to feed every person enough meat for around 3 days. Add in fish and other small game and you maybe have enough food to eat for a week ,then it's gone.
Crops take time to develop , so unless you have seeds & lots of time, you're not going to be growing anything new, and if you do have vegetables growing, you'll have to protect them from hordes of people.
Finally, do you know how to purify water? Most people don't, and cholera is still one of the top killers of people in the world, with water pumping stations and private wells being down, you're going to have to resort to other means to get water. Rain water is drinkable in many cases, however if you're getting it once it lands on the ground, cholera rates increase. The USA actually saw cholera deaths for the first time in many years during Katrina because people didn't know how to purify water. Imagine how bad it would be if the national guard isn't there to hand out bottles of water to people, many will die.
