dunno dude, depends on where you are actually.
Whitetail deer population is outta control in southern Maine and there's plenty of them in Quebec. One average sized deer can sustain a family of 4 through the winter. Currently there's 100 deer per square mile in Maine.
Also Quebec has one of the biggest reserves of fresh water in the world.
So unless we're talking about an asteroid there may be enough wildlife to sustain the local population.

i'm doing a 700 liter system with 1/1 growbed ratio. its taken me about 500$ to do.
i can do 70 tilapia, veggies i dont know. leafy veggies can mature in under 30 days. it should be good.
mostly just an experiment and i would be thrilled if it proved to be a decent supllemental food source

Get the kids, get the big vehicle, get everything worth bartering for goods and join the rest of my extended family up at the lake house in deep east Texas. Plenty of wildlife up there to sustain us. Y'all can fight it out up north. We'll probably have succeeded by then down here anyhow and be supplying oil to both sides.
Regardless of where you go, getting the heck out of the cities would be the best first step. There will be millions trapped in the cities without transportation and chaos will reign for a time and food and supplies will be in short supply. Better to head out of the city where there are fewer people in an area to work with.
As an aside, I was thinking of putting in solar panels just for shits and giggles in the backyard to power some crucial things when/if we get hit with hurricanes and such. Does anyone have solar panels?

damn it... probably the hunter said moose not deer... those weight 850–1580 pounds. A male deer is around 100kg.
Also 5 lbs sounds like a lot of meat for a single burger, a quarter of a pound ( half a pound max) is enough for me. But in an emergency situation a large deer may actually be enough (for 1-2 people not a family of 4 though). Remember, you'd be severely restricted in terms of daily calories consumption.
Still it's definitely not enough to sustain millions of peoples that's for sure, but the local population could probably get by

I need another 9 months or so.. Already have 100 acres in Tn.. Looking at buying 160 more.. Self sufficient farm in place already.. Private lake being built in the fall.. Ability to generate my own electricity should be done by spring.. Neighbors rock, mostly the same set ups all around us..

You either fit in with the subjected people and join a resistance or die. What did they do in Europe with Nazi rule? What did they do when the Romans came knocking on the City walls? You and either get along or fight from within.
You could make it in a sail boat for quite awhile, as long as no other boat sees you. But chances are, someone will and they will come and take your stuff.
I think you all should build underground houses that no one knows about. Though flying my blimp over a fresh water lake, fishing from it, and even dropping buckets for fresh water, sounds interesting. It also sounds ridiculous because someone is going to shoot you down.

Luke, there are more deer and other game animals around now than there were 75 years ago. People wouldn't have a problem finding enough to eat. 95% of them won't know how to fend for themselves, though, and will probably die of starvation or have to sustain themselves on dog food.

It's funny you started this thread. I just finished watching the first episode of Falling Skies from the DVR tonight...of course different scenario from yours (alien invasion).
As for me, I have plenty of weapons and ammo and a potable water supply, along with with a "bug out" plan to head south out of the city.

Considering that the nearest even remotely major population center is more than 40 minutes by car from here, not worried.. That's a long way to fight to try to take some food.. And since we are in gun loving Tennessee, it's far more likely the hillbillies will simply surround the cities and keep the riffraff locked up tight by shooting anyone that tries to get out.. The main reasons we chose Tn were, warm weather most of the year, great people, and no personal income tax.. Great place to come and make serious bank online and keep the tax man out of your pocket..
