Going by history, the murder rate should have went down in the late 80s and early 90s, but crack cocaine related violence probably had something to do with it not.

You and InternetAuthor both have the right idea, with looking at demographic changes and such.

Around 1980, criminologists were pointing out age demographics as an explanation for the murder rise vs. the 1960s, whereas some of the public were sure that it was because of Ozzy Osbourne and Dungeons & Dragons.
