White House Must Address Petition to Deport Justin Bieber

Yeah, many countries give residents tons of rights (I believe in Canada you can even vote with a permanent residency), but the US does not.http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-17527030

Permanent Residents can't vote in Canada. They also need to spend 75% of the time of any 4yr block in Canada or risk losing their residency when they try to renew it, and can have it revoked if they commit certain classes of felony. That's pretty much it though

BBC News - A Cambodian American who can never 'go home'

Jesus. The USA loves to preach human rights, but they certain don't practice them.

Yeah in HK, as a PR I have voting rights. Reading this is just heart breaking. I'm glad I left.

Oh wow. Yeah in HK no matter what kind of crime you commit, you can't have your permanent residency revoked or be deported.

However you need to come to HK once every 36 months to maintain your permanent residency if you are not a Chinese. Otherwise you lose it, and you become a regular resident subject to immigration controls. You do gain your PR back if you live in HK for 7 years again though.

Compared to the EU, US, etc this is clearly a very relaxed policy though.

Did the law recently change? I thought it was they had to spend 3 years out of every 5 in Canada? When did the 4 year thing start?

And getting your PR status revoked is actually quite difficult. Definitely possible, but doesn't happen at the whim of an immigration officer. There's a lengthy process before you're PR status is officially revoked. Then again, there's a lengthy process to get PR status in the first place, so I guess it evens out.

You may be right on the 3 of 5 thing. I know for getting Citizenship as a Resident that its 75% of 4 years, as I just went through the process myself. The retention of Residency may be a little less as I cant remember my last renewal to that much detail. And yes, it's not an instantaneous process having residency revoked, I was just saying that with many felonies it's an option and in some cases it does happen.

Great use of taxpayer dollars.
Agreed. A very rare bang for the taxpayer buck.

I'd back deportation even if Bieber gets acquitted by the judge, exonerated by the President, and hermetically absolved by a united council of churchmen and atheists.

Nope. He shouldn't be deported. Deportation shouldn't be used as a tool to punish celebrities we don't like.

He wasn't drunk. His blood alcohol level was tested at .014 and .011 which is less than the .02 for underage drinkers and .08 for everyone else. He also wasn't drag racing, as the GPS unit has shown exactly how fast he was going and video surveillance from the area shows he wasn't doing anything wrong at the time. So they say he might now face one misdemeanor charge for resisting arrest without violence

You've been following this entirely too closely.
