In a word, voters. Specifically, stupid voters.*

There are a lot of factors that contribute to the problem, but here's one of them:

Some more stats:

- Number of minutes per week that parents spend in meaningful conversation with their children: 3.5
- Number of minutes per week that the average child watches television: 1,680

Awesome. We have dumb voters raising their broods to be dumb voters...

And of course, many of them will vote others' property for themselves.

We're doomed. lol

But remember, people: Vote or Die!

Thank you for joining us for another "Tilting At Windmills" segment. Join us next time when we turn our attention to the debt ceiling.

* but I repeat myself.

All this taught me was that apparently black people watch 50-100% more TV than everyone else. Huh.

If they start taxing the rich, it would solve a lot of problems, Thanks

They walk among us! ;)

The more they watch TV, the less they are competing with me!

Very true. Of course, why compete with you when they can just vote to tax your winnings. Much easier.

I'm tired of all the "woahus us, going to hell in a handbasket, it used to be so much better back in the day" crap.

Young people are spending at least seven-and-a-half hours a day with media -- computers, cell phones, TV or music -- and by frequently multitasking that means they're packing in the equivalent of nearly 11 hours hours of content, according to a 2010 study by the Kaiser Family Foundation. That's an increase from nearly six-and-half hours a day, or eight-and-a-half hours of media multitasking, just six years ago. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/42557051/ns/nightly_news/
Will teen multitasking give rise to ADD? - Nightly News - msnbc.com (This is part where all the oldtimers roll their eyes and start talking about walking uphill in the snow both ways)

“[T]he brain [is] becoming more specialized by getting rid of information it doesn’t use. It’s like pruning branches, allowing the brain to strengthen the connections that will last until adulthood. The doctor scans the teens every two years as they grow up and tests their distractibility. The surprising news? All this multitasking might be making their minds stronger and serves as a cross-training exercise for the brain. There does seem to be a plasticity for the younger adolescents that allows them to get better at mulitasking, to a point.”

Look, if they're all watching jersey shore then yeah I'm inclined to agree with OP but let's not just dismiss digital media outright. It's a new world, for better or worse, the amount of time we're going to spend sitting on our ass infront of the tv or the internet isn't going to go away.

3 hours is even too much tv to watch.
i don't know how anyone could be that into the shows on tv to sit there that long.

Yesterday after supper i turned on the apple tv and watched ancient aliens while i was working. However, i doubt i caught more then ten minutes of it, as i was working.

Wait a sec?!!! 5 hours and 11 minutes on average per DAY?!!!! Fucking hell! I haven't watched TV in over 10 years (excluding movies, of course) - didn't realize the problem was so big. This is insane.

We're fucked (proper fucked, that is).

On the bright side:

The more they watch TV, the less they are competing with me!

Only Tax Payers should be allowed to vote

If you do not pay any income taxes you should not be permitted to vote. Those on government handouts should not be able to vote. They will only perpetuate the system. Not support for the government, not vote.

This was obvious trollage. Anyone responding to it seriously should be ashamed of themselves.

To OP: This does not qualify as Tilting a windmills. That idiom specifically refers to finding something to fight that isn't there... Clearly, this problem exists and is HUGE... But so are our corporate overlords that want it to be exactly this way.

Heck, this is their #1 tool of control over us, so you can bet that if anything this problem will get much worse. -The more they are able to use this on us, the more ads we sit through and ultimately money they make.

I can't believe how many fucking reality shows there are, I mean do we really need a show about hunting the dangerous wild pigs of north america?

LOL to Real Housewives comment.

I saw a commercial the other day that was for a reality show about clipping coupons. It's official - in addition to being ignorant, America is also now the most boring country in the world.

A friend of mine is a 6th grade teacher (private school). She did a survey of her kids, asking them the number of hours they watched TV each day. The results skewed similar to the Nielsen chart. She commented that the kids who watched the highest number of hours were the slowest of her class. The kids who watched the least (happened to be Asian) were the quickest.

It is amazing that people watch that much TV, and train their kids to do the same.

Wrong. I linked to wiki for a reason. If you disagree with their definition, I'm okay with that.

Are you referring to The Real Housewives of New Jersey?

LOL

EDIT: To the person who left the tag, I owe you one. Or, two. I'm beginning to lose count. :)
