CNN is saying Occupy Oakland breifly held a "successful strike" in downtown Oakland. (A burb of San Fran)

Demonstrators in Oakland, California, appeared to carry out a successful strike of downtown businesses Wednesday, as most merchants and retailers shuttered their doors during a largely peaceful protest.

BBC & news.com.au are both saying that Occupy Oakland completely shut down the Oakland port, stopping the flow of capital for the 5th biggest port in the USA all day today.

BBC said:
Thousands of anti-corporate greed demonstrators have closed one of America's busiest ports.

A spokesman for the Port of Oakland in California said maritime operations had effectively halted.

It was crazy today. Usually do not comment on politically charged topics, but outlets are rife with misinformation. The day shift for the port was a light schedule today. Despite what people think pro or con, stopping the port for a day or two or more is not unusual. The Union there is always up to something, even now amidst this action. Yes, people did work the port today, just not many.
 
Guess I'm just trying to find out who's story is closer to being true, or more likely, what REALLY happened that they're not telling us.

Cause this shit is just pathetic. Usually they get stories a bit better than this, even when making shit up without warning...

I just made that map, not trying to mislead anyone here.

Clearly they can't be shutting both down at the same time, can they?

Even if so, the story should mention both shutdowns in both places from both media sources...

CNN seems to be the only one not mentioning the ports. Of course they are the main source of rumors for the american people, so that tells me that the people in charge of america are still trying to downplay OWS's success.

Nowhere near even close to implying that you are misleading anyone. Would not do that. Just taking what you present at face value and wanting to give clarity, if possible.

Just saying that by looking at the distances someone would think those two points are very far away.At least too far apart to effectively engage both areas. In fact, by Bart is about 5 minutes and maybe 20 or so on foot.

Media says 5,000 or so people, believe maybe three times that.

Interesting... Can you confirm that downtown businesses were shut?
Or that protesters covered both areas?

Confirm? To what degree.

If you want Bay Area reports just visit SFGate and InsideBayArea, those are the two main news outlets. Not saying they are perfect media organizations, but between the two there were live video feeds, photo and text streams. Other than that, it was organized chaos and probably brought more diverse groups together in agreement, than people could possibly imagine.

Ports do not bustle with thousands of people working like often portrayed, at least not Oakland. There were less jobs put up today, but people did indeed work the day shift. However, the night shift is a no go.

All things considered, and how the port works it would take a few days if not weeks to have gargantuan financial impact. Tankers sit out there for days on end as is.

But some people do not know this and will think, "Oh Noes, they've taken the ports!"
