Your Opinion About OpenOffice.org?

Six months doesn't make me completely comfortable, but I'll definitely keep it in mind when looking into Libre.

Libre Office isn't really a new product, but the continuation of Open Office. Oracle purchased OO and then a bunch of the open source developers got fearful that Oracle would start to charge for it or ruin it somehow.

Where the software was still open source, the developers were able to take it and continue on with it as Libre. So then Oracle said to heck with it and announced they will not develop OO anymore.

lol If you love, I'm bound to, too. Also, I've been looking for a replacement for my text editor (UltraEdit). I'll check out textpad.

I LOVE textpad version 4.73. simple, easy to use, not filled with more stuff than you need, and just works great. The new version seems a bit bloated to me, too much fluff, but the old version is still available on their downloads section, so I'm guessing I'm not the only one that feels this way.

also, if you are only using office for basic stuff, Open Office will serve you just fine. It's more than capable and does pretty much everything that MS Office does, and just as well. Had a couple compatibility issues with a few powerpoint files created in MS Powerpoint that didn't quite work right in Open Office, but everything else works just fine, especially for your needs from what you say.

Haven't read through the entire thread, but I've got another vote for open office... it has got me through my 2nd year of grad school without any major problems. I would recommend it.

I used to have no problem pirating software but these days I try to find free alternatives whenever possible. I don't feel like I am "missing anything" with OOo.

This thread made me download and try Open Office for the first time in years... yep, still sucks. AbiWord and Notepad++, haven't used anything else in probably eight years.

This.

A couple of weeks ago I tried it for the first time since 2005. When you've got important documents to produce pronto, you want the software with the least bugs and anomalies. Unfortunately, that's still MS Office IMO. And since I find Outlook indispensable, that kind of nails it.

Yeah, I had OO installed at some point a few years back. Decided to try it again a few months ago and it still sucks. Especially their stupid spreadsheet program.

If you are already accustomed to the Microsoft word, then OO might be slightly inconvenient. The buttons, the shortcut keys are different. But if you are using OO from the beginning, then its better...

Didnt want to fork out for MSOffice on my macbook, so decided to go with Open Office. I dont use it a lot, but it fills my needs certainly - after using it, i dont think MSOffice warrents the price tag imo.

Open Office is the only way I can read MSOffice files that my Korean coworkers send me. figure that one out.

I love OpenOffice's spreadsheets, but most of the rest of it I disregard in favour of other apps (won't bother listing them since I'm on Linux. They're obscure apps you've probably never heard of /hipster1234)

I just installed LO this morning and can't think of anything to complain about yet. It loads super-fast next to OO's load time. I've got 6gb of ram and a 2.2 intel and OO still crawled to get up on the desktop -- LO is nearly instant.

I mostly downloaded it because of all the talk about its cross-compatibility with other programs. We shall see. :D

I've used openoffice since I've decided to run linux as my primary OS and have had no problems with excel/word throughout this semester. Just be sure to check extensions when you save so that your instructors can open them (if that's an issue)

Openoffice is clunky, slow to start, slow to save, lacking in documentation, not as easy-to-use.

I can open a photoshop file in photoshop faster than I can open a .odt file in OO. And that's on a quad core with 4 gigs of ram.

I'll still use it over MS Office. But I hate it.

I don't remember the number of years I am an OpenOffice user. I use the portable version (3.3.0 Oracle) and Java JRE 6 Update 25 and it's fast. I use only Calc and Impress. You can use the same VBScript of excel to build macros
Like every Java-based app the first session you run it you have to wait for the runtime to start, after it's fast like other paid office suites. Install the latest JRE Update 25 because it's really a good shoot for all Java-based apps.
