I've been using Libre Office for a couple of days now (based on this thread.) I have to say that it's much faster than OO -- in fact it's blindingly fast over OO. Everything else looks pretty similar, but the speed factor, plus the fact that it will be supported for a while makes it a logical choice.

Thanks to all of you for sharing your opinions. I'm obviously the least-informed guy in the room about this stuff, so you've been a big help. Now, if all of you could just agree. lol
At Moxie: Good to know there's history behind Libre. Lot of folks in this thread seem happy with it, so I'll be giving it a serious look.
At medicalhumor: You and grindstone have just pushed Textpad up to the top of my list. Thanks. No fluff is a priority for me. TP sounds perfect.
At ly2: If I understand you correctly, you're saying you love OO and cannot live without it. Got it.
At subigo: Had never heard of AbiWord before your mention. If you care to share specifics, I'll all ears. But at this point, I'm likely to go with OO (based on ly2's recommendation) or Libre.
At Chianti: I'll keep my eyes peeled for bugs. Thanks for the heads up.
At hannahmcintyre: I use Excel more than Word, so I'm hoping OO's sheet program doesn't suck as much as you're suggesting.
At nmridul: your comment worries me a bit. But I'm assuming OO is designed in a way that even a guy like me can figure it out. We'll see.
At anasoto: when it comes to this stuff, I'm a wimp. So, it sounds like a match.
At fm1234: hannah hates the spreadsheets. You love 'em. (Sigh.) Side note: I should've known you were on Linux.
At Rexibit: compatibility is important. Given everyone's comments, I'll be playing with both packages. Thanks for the heads up.
At IMHopeful: thanks for sharing about Libre's speed. That's a big plus in my book.
At Mr Jacksonian: I haven't had instructors for a lot of years, but I'll keep your comment about extensions in mind.
At Ar Scion: From what IMHopeful says, Libre is kicking OO's ass in speed. If OO is clunky, that's another negative. Like you, I'd still prefer it over MS Office, but may side with Libre.
At MF1967: Good to know from another non-heavy user.

At aglio: I'm gonna need a Word-compatible program in addition to a text editor. But Libre is definitely getting a lot of love here.
