You've got 25k to pend on a car, what do you buy?

An early 2000's used Lotus Exige with under 30K miles...

and this is the perfect example of getting an entry level bmw just as a status symbol, rather than the better car.

Exactly. Buying an entry level BMW or Benz makes you look like a tool. I love seeing young guys driving around in their 3 series (other than M3) or C (other than AMG) classes.

The sad thing is, most chicks don't know shit about cars, so they easily fall into the trap.

Maybe some people buy them for their award winning quality?

The 3-series has been in Car and Driver's Ten Best list 19 times, including every year this past decade.

If they truly wanted award-winning quality, then it would only make sense for them to buy cars that rank higher in the ten best list, which are probably Hondas, Fords etc.

What it boils down to is that most people who have a bit of money want it to appear as if they have more than they really do, so they end up buying an entry-level luxury car to make it appear that that is the case. In short, they're paying for a status symbol.

You obviously never had the ultimate driving machine.
How can you possibly compare a civic to 3-series.
I'm just not older enough for the 5-series, maybe in my 30s.

I didn't compare a civic to a 3 series. He mentioned that people may buy them for their award-winning reliability. I said that if that were the case that they wanted award-winning reliability, then they would buy cars that ranked higher than the 3 series in reliability.

Of course people buy a 3 series over a civic for a better driving experience.

Ford Fusion hybrid is in the Car & Driver Ten Best.

Costs half as much, gets 41 city 36 hwy mileage, has more features, and you'd be getting it brand new with full manufacturer warranty, vs a BMW without one that has been known to have onboard computer problems as of late.

Car and Driver:

"...it is both fun to drive and interesting to drive, offering up new definitions of performance and entertainment."

"It is Donkey Kong addictive, challenging its driver to run on electric power all the way up to a possible 47 mph. This is a boon to both car guys and the unafflicted—you can drive it for fun (a hybrid first) or for mileage (a class-leading 41 city/36 highway), which is also fun."

More room inside than a 3-series, too.

2006 BMW 325i review:

"Maybe your OLDER models have not encountered any problems, but the new ones, are CHEAP! My 2006 325i is garbage. Electronically, it is no good. There is always something wrong with it. The paint is chipping, and forget about the run flat tires. They go out every 8,000 miles. I'm glad my lease is up in 3 months so that I can turn it in and go back to Japanese cars"

This is probably one of the shittiest daily driver cars in the world.

My daily driver is a Camaro SS (that means I can fit a woman in the passenger seat) and a little person in the bucket seat backseats...

The Lotus should be for weekend driving and speaking for personal experience... in South Florida.

Also, I'd like to put an Exige S against ANY BMW on a road course and see if the beamer owner walks away spewing that Ultimate Driving Machine nonsense...

Not that there's anything wrong with a BMW... It's just a bit too middle of the road and laissez-faire for my driving tastes. :angryfire:

Some people do buy them as a status symbol. I know a few, but they still own BMWs so maybe it's just love. Just as the gallardo/boxster/spider/etc. Each luxury brand has it's entry levels.

People want a different beast, but that mindset of status will haunt anyone once taken to BMW for a repair.

I was at a autocross last year, there were mustangs, subis, camaros, vetes, porsches, mazdas, a v8 240z, a lotus, and a cts-v. The cts-v was the fastest car there hands down. It was a freakin beast. To bad they are a little over the 25k limit. fwiw, there are 9 BMWs faster at Nurburgring (the ultimate road course) than the Exige, so I can't agree 100% with what you say. Hell, even the Chevy Cobalt beat the Exige.
