You've got 25k to pend on a car, what do you buy?

man, i hate fucking doing this.. but im gonna say BMW as well if were only talking 25k. If it were more I would feel diff.

However, im not gonna say M3.. im gonna say get a 7 series, or a M5 ( used of course )

You can get a 2003 M5 for close to 25k-27k in some markets:

or a 2004-2005 7 Series for around 25-27k as well:

If you want a car that looks good and has a nice interior go for a BMW, if you want a car that is fun to drive get an Impreza. I used to have a BMW 3 series, it was very pleasant but the rear wheel drive was awful. The Impreza looks crappy but the fun factor is amazing. I've not tried an M3/M5 but that might be a happy medium.

Everyone recommending buying a used bmw or benz . . have you ever owned one (don't actually know. didn't bother to read the entire threat)? Not only have I put thousands and thousands of dollars into them, but my friends who have bought used luxury cars have too.

Obviously there are people who have great experiences with used cars, but for myself and for most of the people around me, their used Bmws and benzes have been nothing but money pits and a pain in the ass.

I very much urge the OP to not buy a used luxury car and to instead by a cheap, new and reliable ford, honda etc.

Buy something classic. You can drive it forever, will never have that 'hmm, car is looking a bit old, need to upgrade' feeling because of course it's old, and that's the point.

I agree that if you are looking into the used BMW that you need to factor in the cost of owner ship to the price. I don't think I have ever heard of a cheap repair on a BMW, people with expensive cars have the cash to pay for expensive parts.

This man speaks the truth. If you're looking to be economical while you pay off your house, get a new Altima/Civic/something similar. Enjoy your reliability, gas mileage, and warranty in case anything goes wrong. Also, I'd stay the fuck away from Volkswagen as I have had nothing but shitty experiences with them. Upgrade to a new BMW/Benz/whatever when you've got your house paid off and don't mind dropping a little extra cash. In the long run, you'd probably be better off just buying a new luxury car now as oppose to a used one even with 50,000 miles.

What Volkswagens did you drive?
Never had any bad experiences, nor my friends.

I had a 2002 Jetta that encountered several problems at ~85k miles. It was awhile back so I don't remember the specifics, but the transmission had to be replaced at ~95k miles. At that point I said fuck it and got rid of it, the repairs were insanely expensive compared to other cars in its class. Also, it had an issue where it vibrated like fucking crazy when you started it and stalled out. I had a few mechanics look at it and no one could fix it, but they definitely tried a ton of different shit which set me back thousands. I never found anyone outside of the dealership that was competent when it came to working on Jettas.

After that I lived with a girl who had a 2000 Jetta that also had a plethora of issues. The tranny on her car went before 100k miles as well. Both of these cars received regular maintenance and treated well. I have heard that Jettas with automatic transmission have a shit ton of problems, it may be different for manuals.

Almost m3 power for 1/3rd the cost

This /thread

Not only will a tuned 335i cost much less but 90% of the time it will be more practical than an M3. The slightly softer suspension, ample supply of torque lower in the rev range, and slightly lower cost of maintenance (unless you boost the shit out of the engine and blow it by 90k) all make the 335i the better choice IMHO. The M3 is a fantastic car but you have to wring it out a bit to get access to the power. As I recall, a properly tuned 335i offers peak torque at 1800 rpm...that's power where you want it. Just drive both and see what you like.
