So, the internet has been sort of a wild west, making our industry possible, and so far it seems like it's gonna stay this way for the forseeable future, where the little guys at least have a footing compared to the big guys/corps. It's how we make our money.

But, what would you guys do if shit like SOPA passed and the relatively level playing field that is the internet would be drastically changed to make the little guy's life of making sites, SEOing them and making affiliate money impossible?

Do you think any of your skills could be applied in other sectors?

How until American's get the balls to drag these people out of their office and execute them? All this SOPA bullshit would quickly stop if pitchfork mobs started killing these tyrants.

You jump first.

I agree, but it's just not going to happen until the gov starts taking things that the average person finds essential for their lifestyle. The average schmuck probably has no clue what SOPA even is.

That's why I wish the Gov't would ban Starbucks and American Idol...
More people would wake the fuck up then!

I'm not American, so it's not my call whether to execute corrupt American politicians that were voted in by American citizens.

While OWS promotes peaceful protest, I don't believe it changes anything. I'd love to see some vigilantes start taking these corrupt fuckers out cloak and dagger style and see the domino effect.

I don't know enough to make a well-educated comment, but while there is enough opposition to SOPA, the majority of Americans don't care or don't know what the hell it is. If they want change, they need to spread awareness.

I agree. Even if Facebook/Google/Youtube don't actually want to do the "blackout" event, why don't they just throw up big red banners at the top of their sites for a day? It doesn't seem like it would be that hard. If they really care, why don't they do this?

A lot of sites already did this. I know Twitter and Slickdeals participated, not sure if the huge guys (Google/Facebook etc) did though.

I would get on tor and organize/join the inevitable revolution that our country is headed towards. Also, OWS is fucking misguided. Occupy the White House would be a much more accurate protest to the issues that are behind the growing anger in this country.

To the feds reading this thread, I do NOT know ^this guy... Never met him, & I don't even think he's funny.

SRSLY, if we lose the net (not going to be SOPA) I do think swiftclick is right; TOR will be vital. All kinds of resistance cells will spring up on this "other" internet... Nothing the feds can do about that. Tor's unstoppable.

Non MSM news sources will have to go into Tor too. I bet Cenk and Alex Jones and RT are all being watched even now by the feds and they're ready to pounce. Going to TOR could stop them from being shut off, but they'd have to move their studios to undisclosed locations and live like wanted men first. :(

What I don't understand about this whole thing is that there is billions of dollar revenues on the "anti-SOPA" side as well.

I know Google spends millions on lobbying now as well, so where the fuck does that money go?

Why don't Google, FB, Twitter, and a few silicon valley VCs just lobby the fuck out of congress against the music industry? As far as I know they have more resources than the music industry anyway.

Instead of blacking out their sites, can't they just spend a few million dollars on this?

Unless you're running a site distributing copywritten works or typosquatting trademarked domains how would SOPA impact your legitimate businesses?

Companies will still have affiliate programs. The internet will keep on ticking along.

You make it sound like meh, it ain't so bad - only the crooks will get caught...

Well "a site distributing copywritten works" is basically every forum you ever visited on the internet. Every user generated site, meme site, tube site, wallpaper or image site, etc. etc.

Take WickedFire for example. I could if I wanted find 1000 copyright infringement cases in one day, present it to congress bundled with some list of other offenders.(there's plenty of torrent site precedents for exactly this) WickedFire would cease to exist because it wouldn't be worth the effort to remove every claim against it, the time and effort could be made too great. Even if Jon & mods went through all that trouble, they'd probably be on some 'offenders' list where if they infringe again for more than X hours they can be permanently shut down.

HUGE/Small staffed websites that can't keep up with removal requests, no matter how mundane, could be shut down. Do you think reddit could keep up with removing copyright material when they had 2 billion page views in a month?

Also, anyone talking about TOR like it's some holy savior... try and keep your post count in line with what you actually know.

In addition to the above reply to you, SOPA and PROTECT-IP (PIPA) also will enable a website to be shutdown and the owner prosecuted for "linking" to copyrighted works. In other words, one of your users or you happen to link to a website containing a funny video that happened to have an artist's music in the background without their permission, good bye.

All of this is done by just tossing a "claim" at the Attourney General's office accusing infringement and the "owners" of said copyrighted works can cut off your site's DNS access and/or payment gateways to stop your funding.
