Windows Phone 8 in detail: new Start Screen, multi-core support, VoIP integration, and NFC | The Verge

Microsoft has given a 'sneak peek' at some of the upcoming features in Windows Phone 8. Besides the obligatory hardware increases that don't really matter to anyone except Android geeks, and a bunch of other interesting shit, some kickass game changing things that stand out to me are:

- Moving from a Windows CE core to a shared core with Windows 8, so software written for Windows 8 will run on the phone and vice versa.

- Fully integrated Skype that runs in the background, not only that but you can accept Skype calls like it was a normal phone call using the native phone app. Suck on that phone carriers.

The enterprise features are going to really drive it home...

- It allows companies to write their own custom apps just for distribution within the company, imagine the potential of that. Forward-thinking companies could move entire workforces to it.

- Full bitlocker encryption.

- The addition of a 'company hub' for app distribution and showing news\alerts within the business only.

Nobody can compete with those without jailbreaking\rooting iOS\Android, which will never happen. If they can gain enough traction in the enterprise world, forgeddaboutit. I'm glad I had the foresight, and foreskin, to choose Windows Phone over everything else 18 months ago.

Sharing the same kernal as windows 8?

So here's how I see this going. Like I've said multiple times here, the distance between desktop and mobile phones is closing fast. It won't be more than a few years till we see all phone simply act as the brains and everything will be based on displays. Seems like this is just another step in that direction especially with Windows 8 apps working on the phone. Fuck that's just awesome. So I can have a full IDE on my phone, now that's what I'm talking about. No need to carry heavy laptops or tablets around, just sync up to a display where ever you are and now your rocking.

Carriers have got to be shitting a brick. What they fear most is skype being used over their prestigious air-time. Fuck you Carriers, I hope you die in hell.

Next major announcement by Microsoft will be the purchase of a large Cell Carrier which they would convert to data only with no more phone lines. That ladies and gentlemen is how you change the way the world works.

I knew something fishy was up when Microsoft bought both Nokia and Skype within a very short period of time. Start investing in Mobile Technologies, it's about to blow the fuck up.

From Engadget: "Nokia Drive has learned that I use different routes to work. Today it gives me the prettiest route. And since I'm leaving for work earlier today, it's giving me the option to take this route and not be so stressed out in my commute."

1) Microsoft never bought Nokia, just partnered

2) iOS has capabilities for in-house enterprise apps/hub also

3) Verizon's new share everything plans have unlimited calling and text included with the 1GB data plan for $50, so they would probably prefer people use data over voice.

4) This looks awesome, but it really depends on how Microsoft markets it and ensures security without needing virus protection on the phone/tablet.

And like makethatgreen said, It's not compatible with everything iPhones/Pods/Pads are compatible with. Also until Microsoft implements a competitor to iCloud it will be at a big disadvantage to iOS still.

My bad, still who knows how far that partnership goes.

2) iOS has capabilities for in-house enterprise apps/hub also

Meh.

3) Verizon's new share everything plans have unlimited calling and text included with the 1GB data plan for $50, so they would probably prefer people use data over voice.

Perfect. Other carriers follow and Microsoft won't even have to dish out the cash for their own carrier.

We both know deep down inside, we'll need an antivirus. However I'm sure that will be true for all mobile devices at some point in future.

Absolutely correct and the first thing that popped into my mind. Specifically my car radio that uses "App Radio" integration with Pioneer. Only works with iPhone / Android.

But I'm rather used to being forgotten about since I've had a BB for 5 years and that thing has no integration with anything. Not even Skype FFS.

SkyDrive?

It syncs files and pictures. But will it sync all your apps, settings, texts, etc. With iCloud backup it restores your phone to exactly it was befor the backup. same apps, icon locations, texts, call log, everything is identical to the way it was on the phone before the backup. This is great for if you have to get a new phone. they give you a brand new phone, you put your iCloud info in and all of a sudden it's exactly the same as the old phone.

SkyDrive is the closest competitor to iCloud for file syncing, but what about music, video, movie, tv syncing?

Also...iCloud is no way perfect, I think all of these 'cloud drives' can learn a little from each other and one can make a perfect solution.

I've been saying this same thing since the first iPhone displayed. Its only a matter of time until your "computing device" is your phone, computer, messenger, etc.. You come home and plug it into your 27" monitor and nothing changes. Not sure how they'll scale desktop apps like an IDE to the size a phone screen but its headed that way.

Carriers have got to be shitting a brick. What they fear most is skype being used over their prestigious air-time. Fuck you Carriers, I hope you die in hell.

Nah, they aren't scared ... they'll just increase the price of data. You still need a data connection to the Internet and that will be 4g for the foreseeable future. They'll just charge you more for data. Welcome to bandwidth caps.

They didn't buy Nokia but they might as well have. I have a feeling Apple will start its own carrier before Microsoft does though.

From Engadget: "Nokia Drive has learned that I use different routes to work. Today it gives me the prettiest route. And since I'm leaving for work earlier today, it's giving me the option to take this route and not be so stressed out in my commute."

Pretty cool.

It would be trivial for Microsoft to add this type of "backup" functionality to SkyDrive. I'm sure its on the to-do list.

Obviously they will, as will android. But if you're looking to get a smartphone / tablet right now iCloud makes using iPhone/iPad simple and always synced with each other. Microsoft making no mention of this, tells me it's not going to be with the original launch of WP8.

Windows Phone 7 came out two years ago, and was equivalent to iOS 1. WP8 is equivalent to iOS 6 in most parts. That's huge improvements for Windows Phone. I hope they keep it up and actually become a true competitor to iOS and Android. Because neither of them are creating any huge improvements lately.

WTF IS MICROSOFT DOING??? THEY ARE ACTUALLY LOOKING TO DO THINGS RIGHT!!

THIS IS SO ABSURD I CAN BARELY TAKE IT.

They definitely started syncing more stuff with SkyDrive on Windows 8, I would assume they will do the same with Windows Phone.

Here are some new sync settings in my Windows 8 install...

Hopefully this move will be the final nail in the blackberry coffin.
I bet you're right about that one.

Especially because of the timing that MS has done this with... Win 8 on desktops are like 1 product to the masses; then win 8 on tablets are like a second, still cool product for the masses; and also a win 8 phone all launching at the same time?

It'll be a SLAUGHTER. This is Microsoft's comeback, plain and simple.

MSFT is looking pretty good right now...

I agree with most of what you said, but you forgot one thing.

The new Xbox is simply put, amazing.

Step 1: Search nasdaq stock "MSFT"
Step 2: Wait 2 years
Step 3: Profit
