I don't think you get it.
When you send an email to your mailing list, does gmail ask you to pay for your email to land in all their inboxes? You can see how that would be unfair right? That's essentially what Facebook is doing.
Not only does it cost money for a business to acquire quality fans (most brands do it either thru Facebook Ads or by running viral contests/promos) but now you also have to pay Facebook to reach them with your status updates.
If you don't pay, you only reach 10 to 15% of your fanbase.
Mailing isn't free. You either pay for and build the infrastructure to do it yourself, which is complex and expensive, or you pay a 3rd party to do it on your behalf.
