Anyone else tired of this "tipping culture" bullshit?

I just don't get the logic. Because the establishment doesn't pay the employee enough, its up to me, the patron, to make up the difference? Fuck that. Yes I know, I will get better drinks, I will get a better bill. But its the principalities that bug me.

But the principality is exactly the point, the tip is there to insure proper service. Tipping wasn't invented as collusion by restaurant owners to fuck their waitstaff, it is there to incentivize the personal nature of dining or your experience at the bar so you want to go back and patronize those establishments. I'm with turbo, I waited tables back in high school, so I tend to over tip waitstaff and bartenders. Baristas and fast food people that make a non-tipping wage, fuck em.

Sometimes it feels right to tip employees for a job well done, even if they're already being compensated. For example, my late mother had arthritic hips and couldn't walk well or stand up for long. At the airport she would get the VIP treatment with attendants hustling us through security, carrying her bags, and pushing her right up to the gate in a wheelchair. The people doing this for her got nicely tipped because the service was very appreciated. I have no problem tipping for a job well done.

I'm not embarrassed to say that I overtip on most occasions. Hell, I just gave a guy $35 for moving my new oven ~50 feet.

Bartending kept my family alive through my early 20's. I'm already teaching my daughter to tip according to my standards. I will REQUIRE that she waits tables for at least 2 years while going through college, there's tremendous on-the-fly math, sales & people skills involved with that profession. True Assets!

I hate it when the guards at parking lots pretend to be helping your bike out of the line even though there is no need of their help. I usually don't give even a shit to them, let alone two or three bucks. But it was the face of that guy which made me give him a couple of bucks the day before yesterday.

It must be very hard to live on that shitty amount they get paid.

I only tip well if I'm going to have anything to do with the business or person in question again. Ensures prompt service and VIP treatment. I pass on Rs.10-20 (50 cents) to the doormen of my apartment now and then and they treat me better than anyone else in the building. They open my car door, pick up my shit and bring it up, bow to me, salute etc; all this makes a big impression on any ho I'm trying to screw so it's well worth the $.

Here in India tipping isn't much of an issue, the equivalent of $1-2 is an adequate tip at most restaurants. The only places around here where tips are expected on par or slightly more than the rates in the western world, would be the "dance bars" or Indian equivalents of strip clubs. But those places charge ~$10 a drink anyway for local beer/whiskey (which is a fucking ripoff here...). I went to 1 yesterday and spent ~$250 on just drinking and tips. I don't mind, but I wish they would add the gratuity onto the bill instead of the pesky waiters who keep begging for a tip for each drink ordered or girl groped.

I'm going to start putting a PP donate button on my landers along with "I'd appreciate it if you took care of me seeing as I let you know about this product."

The only time I ever tipped a washroom servant was when I ran into this girl I had it bad for and wanted to bang at a concert. I had just gotten off work, probably didn't smell the best, so I ran into the bathroom and went through the 20 different colognes until I found one that didn't smell like douche (Chrome ftw). Anywho, I took some of that, a few smokes, and some gum. Gave the guy $5...I threw it in his oversized bowl filled with money...

And I do believe in tipping anyone who's wage is set lower because they are in a "tipping profession." I think it's complete and utter tyrannical bullshit that a person should have to work for less because they might get a voluntary gift from the patron. Pay them what they are worth, get rid of tipping, and let it go back to the way things were where you gave a little bit extra for a person who goes above and beyond what they are supposed to. This autograuity for x amount of people and shit has got to go.

P.s. forgive spelling and grammar, on phone.

I think washroom attendants are only present in places that charge a bomb anyway (there was 1 in the bar I went to yesterday). You must be balling or at least willing to spend money on your visit to such an establishment...and the management realizes that thus try to squeeze you as much as possible. So stop whining and give him a buck :)

You guys mentioned that you understand most waitresses get paid less than minimum wage because tips are expected.

That said, I have 2 experiences on the subject. Since most of you were never "waitresses", I'll share.....

1. In high school I lived in a small town. I worked in a coffee shop where most local people only left a quarter even if the bill was $20 - $30 for a table. In the summer when the tourists came through, we were so surprised to get left $1. It still probably just barely averaged out to a little better than minimum wage.

2. In college, I worked in a busy restuarant 2 blocks from UT. Of course, aside from the "insurance" fund we contributed to so we didn't get screwed when college kids walked on their checks (we were held responsible) - we did very well. And in fact, it was not unusual for me to walk out with more than $100 after a shift. This was a couple of decades ago, and I was a poor college kid - so it was money.

Anyway, after I got my first "real" job after college, I realized I made less money as a new computer programmer for an oil company than I made slinging burritos.

Why not set a realistic minimum wage so tips aren't needed to just survive?

On another note, the 'disease' is spreading to parts of Asia now because of Americans tipping out of habit. Had several persons virtually demand a tip in Thailand & Vietnam.

One of my most important rules is: If they ask for a tip they get nothing.

I hate nothing worse then when somebody that just did nothing for me keeps standing in front of me and trying to guilt me into donating money to him.

Right on.

In Vegas, the cab guy from airport to hotel (20 mins) was tutting and became a grumpy mo fo AFTER I tipped the change - 10%. Dude where I'm from that is generous. Me and my bud looked at each other like WTF and continued about our business. And yeah, cab guys the world over are forever on their phones while driving!

Outside Ceasars, there was a guy opening the cab doors for people, and taking tips! Thanks man but I can open my own cab door. I do it all the time when you're not around, you know.

In NY it has a board in the back of the cab saying it's customary to give a tip if you enjoyed the ride. WTF? I'll tip when I think someone deserves it.

Washroom attendants - never tip them unless I take something they have, gum, squirt of JPG etc. No idea why they'e always black. Yes the womens washroom do have them - I only ever seen a black lady, again who knows why. They're only there to bank off peops in these places where everyone is spending money anyways.

One trick they always use is to drop a big note or coin in there at the start of the night. Gives the impression to the next guy that tipping a big note/coin is the norm = more $$.

Where I live, when you go to clubs, they always talk shit like 'no splash no gash' or 'no spray no lay' to get you to tip them for some cologne as if that'll help you pull. Heard the lines so many times if he misses one out, I actually tell him the ones he's missed out.

I tip for friendly service. Be light hearted and polite, that's all.

I tip my barber cos he's an immature punk who jokes around all day, and puts a smile on everyone face. He's like a friend, remembers me and knows exactly how I want it 'the usual?' etc.

I tipped the Vegas check in clerk $20 one time, but that is cos I literally walked in with a paper list of demands, for a special occassion and she agreed to them all (she didn't know there was a $20 in it for her, and even asked if I was sure and if I wanted change etc - now this lady deserved it).

Staff working below minimum wage? Why's it called minimum wage? Not me being a smartass, it's an actual question..?

I have some friends that pull crucial bank waiting tables. Bonefish Grill and a privately run Greek restaurant in particular. I've watched them, for years, take home $200 each night in tips every Thursday-Saturday night. It has left me wondering if getting a part time restaurant job would make a nice addition to my wallet, but more importantly, my swiftly deteriorating social skills.

I feel pretty gay asking this on WF, but does anyone know of a restaurant/bar that will take someone with no experience. That's not to say I haven't worked my fair share of shitty retail jobs.

My friend works 1 shift a week at a restaurant down here,

- He never came home with less than 100$ in tips
- He got a free trip to mexico from said restaurant
- He has sex with around 1/3rd of the current rotation, some off the wall hot ones in there..there's a fresh rotation of girls and most girls are too dramatic and self-absorbed to get to know one another..bangs them and moves on..
- Last week he got 100$ tip for 120$ bill, this happens every so often..
- They have stuff like staff parties on boats, rent dance clubs etc..

I'd say life isn't too hard for them.

This is going to sound very racist but I'm saying it purely from a philosophical point of view...
1. Most people are unconsciously intimidated by black people, a marketing research must of concluded that people are most likely to tip black people based on said subconscious reaction.
2. The large majority of people in those bathrooms are also white, white people don't like to be seen as racists, which adds additional pressure for the tip.

Fear + unwillingness to be seen as racist = higher % of tips.

It's all about the money, the money is the reason and the reason is the money.

No references here, but I also have to add that it can be really hard work. Even though I made decent money for a part-time college kid, I would go home exhausted and sore (and usually ticked off at some jerk who ruined my day) - and that was when I was in my twenties! I feel sorry when I see a woman who is my own age still doing that sort of work, because I'm sure that kind of thing doesn't get any easier.

Some fancy restaurants are probably easier physically...but I'm always a good tipper in restaurants.

I'm only 22, so the physical aspect of it doesn't bother me. Although my fat ass could use a workout.
