Buy a juicer

went out and bought myself a juicer after reading this thread.. got some apples, oranges, celery, kiwi, strawberries.. maybe a few others i forget..

but my juice tasted like all fuck hell.. any good recipes you guys can recommend? i still chugged it like a boss, but i was expecting it to be at least moderately pleasant.. i love juice

Look up the recipes the guy from the movie uses, I've tried a handful and they're mostly great.

Vitamix is a great blender BUT the Blendtec makes that vitamix look like a toy.

Fast foreword to 3:56 for the goods.

Blendtec Total Blender vs Vitamix, Episode #273 - YouTube

To bad the bitch doesn't know how to use the Vitamix blender the correct way. You are supposed to start the dial on 1 then quickly move it to 10, then flip on the 'high' switch. It's no wonder that the blendtec did better in that video, it was on 'high' from the get-go.

+1 for Vitamix! Use it everyday and love it, so much better than a juicer!

If any of you start juicing on a regular basis I would suggest you invest in a more efficient juicer like a Omega Vert, takes a bit longer but the pulp is bone dry. Centrifugal juicers tend to waste a lot and get hot. By the way you guys saying smoothies are better than juices, you do realise that is the whole point of juices you take the fiber out so the body doesn't have to break anything down. Another reason is you can't sit and eat a bowl of spinach, six carrots and two apples in a sitting but you can defiantly drink them. Not saying one is better than the other but it is pointless to compare the two.

my juice doesn't sit in a hot warehouse for 3 months cooking in its BPA coated container.

and very few contain no preservatives/added sugar.

also, juicer is great for cutting down on waste. when shit starts browning a just juice that bitch. plus, i grow apples, oranges, peaches, limes, and grapefruit.

but is your juice sprayed on by a farmer with pesticides, hormones, pissed on by a goat, and injected with growth agents? organic juicing the only way to go...

i said i grow my own food.

TO EVERYONE WONDERING WHAT TO GET, GET THIS:

BREVILLE ELITE

If you get this, you won't be bitching about the cleanup

and you won't say you can't juice spinach. Totally untrue. You can juice the living fuck out of it.

i like doing shots of spinach, fuck it really "cleans the pipes if you know what i mean...wow an internet farmeketer

Juicing is where its at. Buy a Breville Elite. It is badass.

Here is my favorite:
2 parts Granny Smith + 2 parts Oranges (peel them!) + 1 part Peach = Nectar of Gods

once you start witha tart fruit base, you can throw any fucking veggie in there and it tastes fine. its a great way to get a shitload of micronutrients because you don't fill up on all the pulp, fiber, etc.

it makes you feel so good. i was going to post this in the ADD thread, but pill poppers aren't going to hear it.

start juicing immediately. i second this.

I'm sold. Buying one this week.

very interesting thread.

Can anyone recommend a good concise resource for learning about the nutritional principles of juicing + recipes?

+1 Where can I watch a 10-15 minute video that gives me all the advice I can handle?

Why doesn't one of you fine young gentlemen put together a primer?

Holy shit a juicing thread on WF lol...I haven't started juicing full time yet but since going vegan 6 months ago I've looked into it quite a bit.

Firstly, some of the healthiest stuff to juice is greens. Kale, collard greens, spinach, wheatgrass, etc.. I just had my first wheatgrass shot last week and I swear I thought I smoked a bag of grass or something after a few hours. I started giggling like a retard at one point and was like wtf is this shit. That's how good it makes you feel. I need to either start growing my own when I decide on a juicer or order some flash frozen. Do not buy the shitty pasteurized ones, juices or powders. If it's not fresh, especially for wheatgrass, it's shit. Also try to buy organic. Or at least, check this list for some of the dirtier and cleaner non-organic foods: Executive Summary | EWG's Shopper's Guide to Pesticides | Environmental Working Group | EWG.org

DO NOT get one of those shitty centrifugal juicers that rotate at high RPMs. They cause a lot of heat and end up killing the enzymes (in short without getting scientific on you). I actually made that mistake and ended up with a shitty one for now.

If you want to get the most juice out of greens especially, a masticating juicer is a must. From my rather intensive research so far, it's almost impossible to get the perfect juicer. You need to figure out what you'll be juicing most and go from there. Some are better for fruits, some better for veggies and some best for greens.

Check out this guy on youtube for some comparisons of different juicers. I'm probably going to go for an Omega J8006 or the Omega Vert 350HD.

And if anyone wants to see what kind of magic juice is capable of, see here (this is not a 1 off story, I come across similar stories non-stop when researching raw/juicing):

Now drinking: 6 carrots, 2 apples, 1 orange, 1 onion, 2 garlic bulbs, 2 tomatoes.

Tastes pretty good...

As for spinach yes these kind of juicers suck, but if you put a lot in you get about a cup.

after all solid is more good ......you can eat the whole apple rather than going for shakes......In that u will get pulp, fibres n few more vitamins.....

My standard mix is carrot, celery and apple with a bit of ginger. Don't over-do the ginger, lol. But once you get used to it you will probably start adding all kinds of stuff. Obviously, softer foods like kiwi don't work too well in a juicer.

Owned both Vitamix and Blendtec. Eventually took the Blendtec back.

The Vitamix is not a juicer, it is a blender. Yes, it can blend most vegetables into a drink, but that is not juicing.

When you juice it is best to drink fresh juice to ensure that you receive all of the health benefits of the newly released vitamins, enzymes and nutrients.

Quality juicers are fast, powerful, have short prep-time and speedy cleanup. So there is no need for you to make large batches of juice and risk losing the vital nutrients you need to power your day.

The Breville Elite looks good, thanks for the suggestion.

Wrong, carrot juice is far more nutritious than eating a carrot whole. Fiber is the only advantage of eating it whole, but as mentioned before, try eating 15 carrots, several apples and a lot of other stuff in one sitting

yes, and in addition to that it's only realistic to chomp on fruits, which most of the time aint paticularly good for you. Sure you get vitamins and minerals, but you also get a shitload of fructose as well which doesnt get digested, but goes straight to the liver to be turned into glycogen (most of the time the liver has plenty of glycogen so it just gets turned into fat).

The real nutritional beneft comes from the leafy greens and vegetables, that are low in sugar and high in minerals that are fantastic for the body.

you cant really eat celery or cale or half a cucumber, even if you can tolerate the taste, it's still boring, you want to be able to just quickly and easily drink it.

As for the fiber, as I said earlier, the juicer does not give you the fiber, that's why I'm moving onto the vitamix which preserves all the fiber.

Also, the juicer creates soo much wastage, Im surprised environmentalists aren't protesting to get the juicer banned. You put in a basket of vegetables to get 1 ltr of juice, most of it is water obviously, it creates sooo much waste.

The juicer is the cheaper option away from the vitmix, but if you're a frequent juicer, you will have wasted so much money away by discarding perfectly edible food, you should consider a vitimix because you only need a quarter of the food you need compared to a juicer, and you have a lot more flexivily on what you can put it, like bananna and spinach

There is no evidence to suggest that a juicer is better for vitamin and mineral delivery. In fact it's probably better for your body to have the vitamins and minerals delivered in a more solid form, so there is a delay in absorpotion, as the body has to break down food [like the case with the vitimix], we know that if you drink too much glucose it will cause a "sugar rush". I'm sure if you flood the body with so much vitamins all at once it will have some side effects as well. Or it just wouldn't be efficient because the cells will be over capacity. WHich can be solved by a delayed release of vitamins and minerals.

I don't really agree with that. The juicer has 5 pieces to clean.. the mesh filter, the bowel enderneath the mesh filter, the waste bin, the see through top and pushing block. The mesh filter is a bitch and takes a good while and some elbow grease to clean out properly.

The fruit prep issue is a bit silly, you still need to wash your fruits and vegetables throoughly anyway, the celery is a bitch because you need to break up the stalks and wash out the soil that gets collected inside.

The vitamix has just 3 parts to clean, food prep probably takes less time because there's fewer stuff you need to put into the vitimix.

I have one, used to use it until I realized you have to buy $10 in shit just to squeeze out a couple servings. Pain in the ass to clean also, I would PASS

Some one recommend a good vitamix blender model? There are too many to choose from.

I believe the Vitamix 5200 is the most popular model.

Check for demos at Costco near you if you have a membership.

Here is the list for the L.A. area...

My Blendtec warranty was extended by 3 years for buying during a Costco demo. Vitamix might offer something similar to Costco members.
