Convince me to spend $2,500 on something other than an iMac

if you like bash/lamp/unix and you dont want to fuck around with bullshit all day then osx is your best friend. If you don't give a fuck about any of those things then windows is fine.

xkcd: Cautionary

Gone are the days of fucking around for weeks trying to get your sound, video and wireless to all work properly in linux (I don't think I've even touched an xorg config in over a year). There is the occasional short lag between driver releases, and realtek still suck dick at making working drivers, but otherwise, linux is pretty damn compatible these days.

I was really referring to Photoshop and some of the games I like to play. I'm not exactly very skilled at using Photoshop, but The Gimp is horrid.

I should actually probably give LINUX another try. I tried it years ago (back in 2004 or so), and within a couple days I was back on Windows. It was simply too draggy, and not user-friendly enough. It was fine, but just all the small things combined. The shortcut keys, smooth navigation, organization of the menus / desktop, etc. It simply took me longer to get things done in LINUX than in Windows. Has this been resolved now, and things are smoother, and more user-friendly?

If so, I'm guessing Ubuntu is the dist I should go with? I would absolutely love to work off LINUX, but only as long as I can stay as productive & efficient with it. There would be loads of benefits though. I would love to just simply rsync shit around as needed, have an exact replica of the devel server on my computer, and the list goes on.

So is Ubuntu caught up to speed in user friendliness in say the past 8 years? And thinking of that, fuck, now I have to go buy another laptop.

you can be running the live install off of a usb key in like 30 minutes if you wan to play with it.

I use both.
And both are nice....
Mac is more like an obedient child, but I also love the windows 7. I never used Vista.. Leapfrogged from XP to Win 7..

Here is a nice little comic..

This X 1000. I used to be linux only (virtual box XP guest for windows crap). I used Ubuntu desktop religiously on Lenovo thinkpads.

Then I suddenly needed OSX for Xcode so i just got a macbook pro and installed Ubuntu and XP as guests in virtualbox just for kicks.

I found bash and all the apps I was using were available here anyway (some after macports) so I eventually just stuck with OSX and it has improved productivity by avoiding a lot of tedious bullshit. Now I can have all three OS's up at any time and the core OSX is stable as fuck.

The only thing that's been buggy so far is mac fusion for mounting remote filesystems, nautilus in linux is more stable. Everything else has been more stable in OSX thanks to more native support.

Overall I still use both, but the moving around multiple desktops/applications makes work flow better with the mac trackpad. Personally it's worth the price, time is money when you're in the zone.

I run everything I need in seamless VM's (I need them anyway for cross OS testings). With any half decent i7 processor, and ~4gig/ram, you don't really have much performance loss.

Sorry, I read that as copy.

mv <src> <dst>

COMMAND+C
COMMAND+OPTION+V

Dropping into a shell and typing out often long (annoying) commands to move sucks. As mentioned above cmd+opt+v doesn't work in lion anymore (though I refuse to "upgrade" to lion).

I'm honestly sick of the entire cmd key. Use a windows keyboard, and I have to windows+ everything but I'm all good in a shell. Use the mac keyboard, and I'm awkwardly ctrl+(shift)?+c/v all the time in remote shells, and the function key is entirely in the wrong spot to not drive me insane. Then dealing with 13+ imap accounts in OSX is hell.

If the command key acted as a ctrl key in remote shells, it probably wouldn't be so damn aweful, then command+shift+c would be just an awkward move anyway.

I 100% agree with you that Windows 7 is hands down the best OS Microsoft ever released. However, it really depends on how he uses his computer. If he is like me and spends most of his time in a shell then Windows (regardless how nice Windows 7 is) is a pain in the ass to use, because it's designed to be used as a GUI only. I grew up using DOS, System V, then Linux and the transition to OSX was pretty painless, because I can use it just like I use Linux. The only difference in my usage is actually being able to run the applications I want without a crap load of hacking.

What the - fuck - are you talking about? Win 7 is the easiest version of Windows to use, period. Like you I grew up on DOS and have taken a liking to Linux (Debain based). You can not compare the two. Windows is a main stream OS, Linux is for the rest of us that want to hack around. There is nothing Windows can not handle, there is not point to run Mac OS.

Stupid Mac OS guys will be stupid. Everyone else will use Windows because it rocks your socks.

I would love to hear how Windows 7 is a pain in the ass to use. Seriously, you must be fucking retarded.

Uber baited you with a classic pc vs mac debate

95% of this thread is unoriginal.
WF's like reading an "elite" carpentry forum and every other thread is about a member cutting off their thumb or putting a nail through their hand.

Oh how cute, Rage9 can't see how someone could more comfortable with a *NIX shell than they are with Windows so they must be retarded.

The one things I'm missing here is how OSX = More productivity... ?

I guess to be fair, Mac's OS is designed for the less tech savvy and more friendly to the simple-minded user... so maybe you mac fags are just too retarded for windows... that is intended to be both insulting and completely serious at the same time by the way.

But I do 99% of my work off my mac because I work a lot better. I earn about 4x more when working mostly on my mac, compared to when I tried to use my windows computer for a few weeks.

I would love to hear how Windows has a bad 'workflow' compared to OSX?

I use OSX on my Macbook Pro and I equally use Windows 7 on my desktop.

Fancy swiping between screens = earn 4x more revenue? my arse.

I have a Macbook Pro. I get pinwheels all the time. Sometimes it turns off for no reason. Also, why do I have to push so many goddamn buttons to take a screenshot?

I wouldn't say it caught up but it is significantly better. If Apple keeps moving the way they are going and locking down what apps you can and can't install I'll head to Ubuntu before Windows. It's "good enough." for what most of us do I believe.

Unix - Servers
Mac - Development
Windows - Crappy SEO Apps and timewasting games

Why is OSX better for development? I use my Macbook Pro during the day at the office, and my W7 PC at home. Honestly Dreamweaver has crashed on my MBP more times than I can count, it's an almost daily occurrence. Doesn't happen on Windows. You can blame Adobe if you like, but it still doesn't support your theory.

Nobody ever answers the 'why' question... it's always generalised bullshit. I designed my sig in OSX, what does that tell you?
