Iceland took the hit and they're doing pretty good now a couple of years later, while Greece decends further into tyranny and poverty.
Productive people are going to be productive, merchants are going merchant. People are not going to stop doing and making shit. Argentina is still there too isn't it with a decent standard of living.
The market would find a way - quickly. The so called depression might only last for a year or so.
Lets see the real consequences. Some people would lose jobs, mostly those in government, finance, human resource and such. Who cares? Let them starve a bit, they've been overfed anyway.

Although I agree with the gist of your post, this sentence is sadly mistaken.
The people in power have the keys to the very most devistating war machines the human race has ever produced. Not just on foriegn soil, either...
I can't even imagine a world in which we enter a real correction and the ruling elites don't use these machines against us to squeeze out more of our production to ensure their lives stay comfortable.

The US has been at war continuously for a long time now, and Keynesian spending hasn't helped recently, either. It just causes more malinvestment, which is already a problem. The US can't fix this problem by continuously killing people, or it would be fixed by now. Buying tanks for every podunk police department hasn't helped anything, either. You can't spend your way out of a debt problem.
Let's say I can't afford my car loan. So I take out a loan so I can pay my car loan. Then I take out another loan to pay the loan I'm using to pay my car loan. I can't afford that loan, either, so now I better get another loan so the car industry and banks don't suffer. Who in their right mind would keep giving me loans to pay loans I can't afford? Shit don't work that way on a micro scale, and it doesn't work that way on a nationwide scale, either.
When you can't afford shit, you can't afford it, and no amount of paper printing will help. The dollar is losing its place as a reserve currency, and that's when shit will really get bad. You can only enforce dollar value with the military for so long.
