Fucking consumerism. Rant inside.

I just can't believe anyone could equate things like high speed internet and air conditioning to what we are complaining about. You sound like you read a 1-sentence brochure about anti-materialism and came here for some reason to try to argue against it with really shallow assumptions. :disgust:

My apologies for trying to assume he was getting at deeper issues rather than teenage angst filled "nobody understands me" mentality. What he mention is in direct relation to what I spoke about, and the underlying issue here is much greater than "LOL SHEEPLE."

I guess I'll live you children to jack each other off about how everyone's so much lesser than you, and how the corporations just wanna bring you down, man.

He obviously was trying go do deeper than teenage angst; most of this planet has no idea of life outside the herd, so clearly understanding the perils of too much consumerism is not associated with teenage angst.

I chimed in against your sentiments when you took sides with the corporations.

I guess I'll live you children to jack each other off about how everyone's so much lesser than you, and how the corporations just wanna bring you down, man.
There are at least three bad assumptions in this sentence alone.

The most relevant one being; "the corporations wanting to bring us down."

That's not what they want at all; they want to farm us for money exactly like you want to make money off of sheeple who click your ads... Except I doubt that you go to the great lengths they do like buying and selling every elected official & law in DC a thousand times over to do it.

Given the current environment, capitalism is good.

Have to disagree, and if anything, say it's horribly bad at this moment in history. What do you think caused the huge, global recession and housing bubble? Absolutely massive corporations, using their power and leverage to fuck everyone else with a large red, white & blue pole. If anything, that's capitalism at its finest.

Want to fix the US economy? Allow small businesses to flourish again. Hike taxes on major corporations by 30%, and invest all that money in small businesses. How is some small business owner who wants to open a local hardware store supposed to compete against Walmart, for example? They can't, so they stay in poverty working some shitty job at some warehouse.

Capitalism is definitely good, but you have to level the playing field every once in a while. Right now, it's out of control.

Lets take a simple example that everyone here can relate to: Beer.

People who buy shit have been sold shit. Plain and simple. If you buy a beer, then somebody sold you that beer. Some commercial, some salesman, somewhere at sometime... You got an image of a beer as a good thing that someone else put there. The desire for it did not originate within you.

Were you thirsty?
Did it taste good?
Did it make you feel great?

...All irrelevant!

Beer is NOT the best at quenching your thirst; Gatoraide would do a better job.

Beer is NOT the best at getting you drunk; some Bacardi 151 would do the job far faster & cheaper.

The only thing you should be asking yourself when you feel like a beer is if it is the best beverage to do the job of quenching your thirst or getting you buzzing. (Unless there is some 3rd reason to drink one I'm not aware of.)

Why? Because all desires are put there by others. So if you discard desire, then you can make the SMARTEST decisions.

Mind = blown.

I used to love the hunt for money - I was gonna be a milionaire by 30, then 40 then I figured out what I needed for a lifestyle and how much cash was required to maintain it. I didn't need no million bucks - if you are single you can live for fuckall in some of the best places in the world.
Inference: you failed to make money.

Of course you don't need it. But its a hell lot of fun to drive a m3 around on the german autobahn with 330 km/h, believe me. its also fun to travel around and live on an island and fish & grill. its all about fun mate. if you hate consumerism just let go of it and go to some fucking island and live with some bushniggers. live & let live. do what you love and let others do what they want.

advertising is not bad in itself. even animals advertise to their female counterparts. you have to get word out on the street to get your product out. your product can be good or bad. it can be anything. it can be your dick, it can be a shitty biz op, it can be a quality product that helps to improve other peoples lifes.

so if you get frustrated with sheep people and deceptive advertising methods, build your own quality product or a model you can live with. no sense in doing what you hate.

yes, you're a whore. but the money is good, so stop whining and bend over again.

What did I decide to do though? Figured since I'm making good coin, I should get a nice condo in a highrise, and some fancy leather furniture, nice large screen TV, and a bunch of other stupid shit I didn't need, or care about. Don't know why I did that. I guess just because that's what everyone else does, what was expected of me, and I figured that must be the way to a good life. How wrong I was. Instead of binding myself down into some condo with a bunch of expensive and useless shit, I could have been travelling the world, hanging out on the beaches of Rio, etc.
Travel is overrated. If you've seen one mountain, one beach and one world city you've seen them all. Experiencing different cultures on the other hand, is not a pleasant thing to do if you are a misanthrope & such frivolous pursuits require an abundance of wisdom & money anyway. Where are you going to hibernate at the end of jumping around the world? Are you going to take the bus or ride a bicycle whenever you want to go outside? A solid home base should be the first priority & obviously this includes home/land/apartment ownership and enough money to ensure you always have a good car and a good lifestyle. It's not travel vs being tied down. You can travel AND own stuff in your home base. Just stay single and try to be sober...

TL;DR.

Be the producers, not consumers. If others want to be consumers, let them be.

This whole thread is pointless.
