GM Says Facebook Ads Don't Work, Pulls $10 Million Account

Not surprising. Have you guys ever taken a look at what they teach in advertising majors in college?

It's pretty hilarious.

Yup, I actually studied advertising at a faculty of economics and dropped out because I saw it was nonsense even back then.

It's pure mental masturbation devoid of any real world applicable information. But then again, that holds true for economics in general... I should have known better.

Fixed.

That's why I dropped out.

Claude Hopkins was once asked how to improve college advertising books and he told them to burn them lol.

Real world experience , campaigns, testing, wickedfire threads FTW.

Wait, so 17 year old Jimmy who goes to Facebook to post pictures of his 6pack and talk to bitches isn't a good fit for GM cars? I don't believe that for a second.

Seriously though, Facebook is good for some products. But cars? Come on. People go to facebook to waste time at work and play fucking farmville, if they happen to see an ad for a groundbreaking new berry that sheds 20 pounds a day then they may very well buy...but cars? I don't see how Facebook ads will ever compete with Google ads or even Bing ads in the sense that people who are on Google and Bing are there because they're actually looking for a specific thing, and Google can then show them ads for that very thing they're looking for. The only thing people on facebook are looking for is cock and pussy and something to pass time.

Fuck facebook anyway, hope their fucking stock tanks harder than our penguin sites.

Hopefully other branders will follow so one day the CPCs will drop back down to levels that aren't laughable.

sad thing is... if branders started leaving facebook would be out some serious money and the opposite might happen. They would probably force the bid prices higher for the rest of us to make up the difference.

I approve GM's move

Is the social media management division unionized? I'd love to get a sample of how a unionized social media management office/division is run...holy shit.

It has to be a big fucking wankfest for the GM executive's kids and their friends, maybe done through some executive's wife's bullshit "new media" agency, probably around 400 fucking worthless scumsuckers who fiddle on facebook while Rome burns.

general motors should stay away from fb... fb are children tools... not adult tools, they need to go to TV ads or auto forums ads... but they gonna provide a mac book for their technician to support the project... lol..

Big difference between an ad agency and a direct response marketer. Not surprised. John Carlton talks about how Ad agencies were sneaking him in the backdoor when he first started out, (not sure if that's part of his hook). But it's true, you can't really measure the response of an ad when branding. Anyone have any examples, other than pics? Hopefully more ad agencies pull out of facebook, could make things interesting. Thanks for sharing

Corporate Ad Agencies make Acai rebill merchants look legit with how much bullshit they sell. The difference is, it's usually the client they bullshit to these days.

The Ad Contrarian

He said this on Facebook, which is pretty much dead on from a big company POV

It's effective for small companies because they have owners you can get to know, but a stupid idea for larger ones.

Disney CEO dis's Facebook advertising

Bob Iger says in this interview on Mad Money last night that a 30 second spot on Primetime TV is still better than an ad on Facebook. About 5:40 into the video here:

News Headlines (About a 10 minute interview.)

He also adresses a few other things that may be of interest to anyone doing any type of Marketing.

Oh, and for you Marvel Movie "Fan Fags" he gives out some info about that franchise as well!!!

No one buys coca cola because they see a fucking polar bear drinking coke during the superbowl (branders gona brand). What the fuck did GM expect.

If GM wanted to get more bang for their buck. They could target an area and advertise a this week only sale at bobs gm, first 100 people get an ipad. Pick up leads for sales people to call by giving away that sweet new camaro. For 10 Mill I would have sold many cars for them.

The study he linked on brand engagement on Facebook fan pages was good stuff. A "like" is not engagement but sharing or commenting is engagement. And the study, a pretty big sample of 200 large brand fan pages, showed less than half a percent of "engagement" by visitors.

So is it even worth doing fan pages at all?
