how much do u pay for health insurance?

97/month with Blue Shield CA. $4000 deductible. Basically I'm paying for coverage in case I explode my body when surfing or whatever.

I prefer to spend my money on high quality food and never get sick, not the other way around.

In doing 2011's medical expenses, they were a whopping $80 (thought I had strep - I didn't). I'd dump the insurance if I didn't occasionally do crazy shit and don't want to stroke my mom out since she'd never sleep at night if I didn't have it.

Edit - Might do an HSA at some point as a rollover tax shelter, which can then be applied to said deductible and whatever else. My tax guy hasn't advised this yet though.

I didn't see anybody mentioning an HSA. A lot of you guys might like to combine a high deductible major medical policy with a savings account that can pay for a lot of out of pocket stuff (and is tax deductible).

Plus, if you don't use the money, you can keep it at retirement age AND some HSA accounts pay interest (probably not much any more).

BRB - spinning into an article.

But yeah - even if you have a 10K deductible, or something, it is so much easier to have health insurance. When my daughter was in the hospital, we got bills for the regular rate AND the PPO negotiated rate - it was a huge difference.

And you libertarians out there trust health insurance companies to take care of you.....

I already beat you to it yesterday. :)

For you guys that don't have any...why not?

Srs question.

Edit: To answer OP's question: about $260/mo with BCBS. Healthy, single 33 year old white male non-smoker.

I have to have it. I teach Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu..I've already had to have half my meniscus removed and a herniated disc in my neck. (More likely from 6 years of football than BJJ) I couldn't imagine not having it.

Anyone have any suggestions for this situation:

I'm a US citizen, but am living abroad on a basic tourist visa. I have no US or local health insurance (don't need it here, healthcare is a great value). I'll be in the States for a few months this summer and come through periodically for work/family. When I leave the country again in the fall, I may get a longer-term visa (Mexico). So I'd love to have insurance that covers me for anything major, both in and out of the US. Since I'm young/healthy (ADD pre existing though), I'd like to not have to pay a fortune.

Depending on how long you are going to be in there, you are either going to want temporary insurance, or travel insurance. I'd get quotes for both and go with the cheaper of the two.

Either way it will be much easier to obtain in your situation versus you moving her permanently and having to get fulltime insurance.

Why pay 5k a year for something I rarely use? I go to the doc when needed. It cost a few hundred bucks to get checked out. I pay for my own dental which is about $200 a year (6 month cleaning), I don't eat sugar so I don't get cavities. So about 300 bucks a year in medical. Why would I pay 5k a year? So I can pay for unhealthy people or needy people to use it?

The purpose for buying insurance is not to pay for routine visits to doctors, dentists, etc. You get insurance in the event that something unexpected and serious happens.

For those of you that don't have insurance, I would consider getting something that covers major events and maybe has a high deductible. It's very inexpensive and worth it if you do happen to need it.

A good friend of mine was diagnosed with testicular cancer at 29. Perfectly healthy, worked out all of the time, ate the right foods, etc. He beat it twice and had over $1mm in medical expenses. He ended up passing away due to heart failure, but if he didn't have health insurance his family would have been stuck with a mess and all of his assets would have gone to medical companies instead of to his family.

thank you

^^ Please ban this.

Da wife got sick 'bout 5 years ago - staph infection in the blood. Destroyed her heart valve. 10 days cost about 260 G's. I had just gotten coverage at my new job 3 weeks before.

btw, this is someone that never even had the flu in her life. It was most likely from a dental procedure she had years before.

350 a month for myself with Blue Cross Blue Shield

they are the best IMHO and most providers take them

my deductible is 5 k I think

to the OP if you want good health insurance go with BCBS.

they do a 5 year medical screening on your just so you know for anything they deem not insurable like pre existing medical shit
