Our healthcare/insurance system here in the U.S. is the best for everyone though, and I'm personally glad we will never see the day of a complete "socialist" overhaul or anything like that. "It just won't work"
I didn't see anybody mentioning an HSA. A lot of you guys might like to combine a high deductible major medical policy with a savings account that can pay for a lot of out of pocket stuff (and is tax deductible).
Plus, if you don't use the money, you can keep it at retirement age AND some HSA accounts pay interest (probably not much any more).
BRB - spinning into an article.
But yeah - even if you have a 10K deductible, or something, it is so much easier to have health insurance. When my daughter was in the hospital, we got bills for the regular rate AND the PPO negotiated rate - it was a huge difference.
And you libertarians out there trust health insurance companies to take care of you.....
For you guys that don't have any...why not?
Srs question.
Edit: To answer OP's question: about $260/mo with BCBS. Healthy, single 33 year old white male non-smoker.
Anyone have any suggestions for this situation:
I'm a US citizen, but am living abroad on a basic tourist visa. I have no US or local health insurance (don't need it here, healthcare is a great value). I'll be in the States for a few months this summer and come through periodically for work/family. When I leave the country again in the fall, I may get a longer-term visa (Mexico). So I'd love to have insurance that covers me for anything major, both in and out of the US. Since I'm young/healthy (ADD pre existing though), I'd like to not have to pay a fortune.
Why pay 5k a year for something I rarely use? I go to the doc when needed. It cost a few hundred bucks to get checked out. I pay for my own dental which is about $200 a year (6 month cleaning), I don't eat sugar so I don't get cavities. So about 300 bucks a year in medical. Why would I pay 5k a year? So I can pay for unhealthy people or needy people to use it?
